: Porsche 996 Turbo, BMW M3 CS E46 and Jaguar XKR
: BMW M3 Evo 2 E30 (the investment car!) and Porsche 997 GT3 Gen 1 (for a Sunday drive)
: "All cars listed above are cars that I class as performance cars. So for the £100K I will have cars of different performance styles from hot hatches to saloons to coupes. I will require an estate for the boot space when I go away. I will also need something rather nippy to deal with cities and towns."
Volvo V70 R AWD (1999)
: "Because I had a V70 from the same period and it's the same with all Volvos; they will go on and on and on! The reason I chose a V70 R is so that I can enjoy performance driving when carrying large amounts of stuff. Being AWD also means it will be useful whatever the weather. And in my opinion for under £3,500 there is no better car you can buy than a Volvo estate." [Clearly someone else thought so too Adam as the V70 has sold! There's no suitable replacement at the time of writing - MB].
Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 (1990)
Cost: £5,250
Balance: £91,500
Why I chose it: "I chose this because unfortunately there isn't a Clio Williams for sale. However, the 205 GTI 1.9 is a car I have always had a soft spot for. It is also one of the greatest hot hatches ever and is extremely easy to throw around and is very agile. Although I would prefer a T16 but seeing as this is a £100K garage, nabbing one of those would be difficult!"
BMW M3 E30 2.3 (1990)
: "I have chosen this because not only do I own one but it is also one of my favorite cars of all time. It is basically a race car for the road. It has a stunning engine which sings a fabulous tune, born from the M1. BMW did this by taking the M1's six-cylinder engine and taking two cylinders out of it. The E30 M3 was a race car which had a goal of beating Mercedes' 190E in different touring car championships all over the globe. The one listed above is unfortunately not an Evolution as they are the most track ready off the lot and now go for between £70,000-£120,000. The E30 M3 is also a very hands on vehicle to drive with its five-speed manual gearbox and 195bhp engine for the standard E30 but 240bhp for the Evo." [It would seem the £30K M3s don't stay for sale for long! This car has sadly gone but so have a few others. See
here.
But the cars are available, albeit for very short periods... - MB].
BMW M3 CS 3.2 SMG (2006)
: "The first car in this garage which was made in the 21st century - yes, it's another M3! This car is in my garage as I see it as one of BMW's last ever 'Ultimate Driving Machines'. It also makes a fabulous buzz when accelerating. The CS fits in between the standard E46 M3 and the hardcore CSL. The price for the CS seems quite normal compared to the astronomical value of the CSL."
Porsche Cayman R (2011)
Cost: £41,500
Balance: £10
Why I chose it: "Simply superb! Because as a driver's car there is nothing better for under £50,000 and is, surprisingly, better than any other Porsche or performance car for the money. I might even dare to say the Cayman R delivers a driving experience you would expect from a £250,000 car. But you have to have the manual for the best driving experience."
