Time moves fast in the world of electrified cars. With the Polestar 2 already well received (and its range of models growing by the week), it's almost time for the 609hp Polestar 1 to be retired. The production run was always capped at three years, and comes to a close at the end of this year. With the last few build slots ever still to be allocated, Polestar has announced a special edition to see its first model off in style.
Your eyes don't deceive you: that really is matte gold. With stitching to match. The colour has become almost a trademark for Polestar, seen on brake calipers and seatbelts (and CEO Thomas Ingenlath's suits) for a while, and therefore makes some sense for a final edition of the plug-in hybrid GT that announced it to the world. Of course, whether those intrigued by Polestar's fairly restrained, under the radar alternative to something like a Bentley Continental GT will want something quite so attention grabbing remains to be seen.
Still, there doesn't need to be many of them, with a maximum of 25 gold editions to be built as production winds down. And there's likely to be fewer than 1,500 made anyway, so a very rare version of a limited run car. Thomas Ingenlath said of the 1: "We pushed boundaries with this car, not only in terms of engineering but also in its design and execution. Polestar 1 set the tone for our brand and its genes are evident in Polestar 2 - as they will be in our future cars to come." Given all that's happened so far, don't expect to be waiting long for that.
