You may have noticed there's a rumour circulating on them there interwebs suggesting a Porsche 911 Blu Edition is set to debut at the Frankfurt IAA in September. It's quite a compelling idea on the face of it - a depowered 3.4 Cabriolet producing around 300hp that would, as a result, become the most efficient 911 Porsche has ever built.
The rumour, which seems to have originated with the 911UK forum , speculates that with a little help from an upgraded stop-start system, improved energy recuperation technology and some lightweight engineering (including a "composite" hardtop in place of any kind of folding roof), such a car would emit just 152g/km CO2 and return 44.1mpg while still sprinting 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds.
If that sounds remarkably in-depth for a rumour, just get a load of the other details: CarboSil-coated pistons for reduced friction, titanium conrods, peak power at 6,200rpm, peak torque of 211lb ft at 5,800rpm, half-sized radiators, air-flow smoothing vent shutters for reduced drag, cylinder deactivation, lightweight wheels, and a price tag 9,500 euros less than a standard Carrera PDK coupé.
Sounds vaguely believable until you get to the price (since when has any VW Group eco product ever been priced less than its ordinary siblings?). And the colour scheme. Which is mooted to be the exclusively vomit-inducing combination of Rivera Blue with Guards Red detailing. Did someone get a little carried away with Photoshop? Regardless the story spread, Carscoops, Carbuzz, WorldCarFans, GTSpirit and many others running pieces of varying credulity on the car. Jalopnik was among the few smelling anything fishy, the General Gassing reaction being 'Is it April already?'
Anyway, due diligence: we simply asked Porsche in the UK. And got the simple answer that there will be no 911 Blu Edition at Frankfurt 2013. The firm is concentrating on the 50th anniversary celebrations - and (duh) the production debut of the 918 Spyder. Which ought to be enough for anybody.
Of course, that isn't the same as saying there will be no eco 911 ever - in fact, it strikes us as exactly the kind of thing Porsche might want to do - but for the time being we're all clear...
