Porsche specialist Techart has added to its parts catalogue for the 992 with a new tuning kit to unlock more power and character from the turbocharged Carrera S and 4 S engines, upping peak output to 530hp and raising the volume of the exhaust system. Techart achieved this with different engine control software, while new titanium pipework lightens the exhaust system by 40 per cent. More significantly, in cars without a particulate filter, it gives the 911 3.0-litre flat-six freer lungs so that new ECU map can make the most of it all. Those with cars featuring a factory-fit filter can still install the kit, but gains are limited to 510hp as a result.
That’s still a growth of 60hp over standard, though, and enough to ensure the Carrera 4 S can hit 62mph in just 3.2 seconds – which is only a tenth shy of what the all-wheel drive 992 can manage when the particulate hardware is removed. Top speeds all round are 195mph. We’re not given 0-62mph stats for the rear-drive CS, but don’t expect much more than a tenth or two to be added to those numbers. So good is Porsche’s launch technology these days that there's little difference between the standard two and four-wheel drive CSs, and all of the 992s we've tested haven't been lacking in punch as it is.
Naturally, the power gains come accompanied by boosts to torque, with the particulate filter-free exhaust system once again allowing for the greater improvement to 465lb ft, up from 391lb ft, with the filtered car reaching 450lb ft. And Techart says the vocals are similarly boosted, claiming greater volume throughout the rev range and more crackles, when the engine modes are set to Sport or Sport Plus and the valves are open. That, you may have guessed, means the full setup retains Porsche’s standard electrical control settings, so things can be quietened down – and power actually reduced – when the car’s in its default or Comfort modes. Boost is reduced even more in Wet Mode.
We’ve not been given pricing yet – we're on the case to get some numbers – but given the limited amount of work done to achieve such significant gains, dare we say it might amount to pretty good value for money, especially because Techart backs its kit with a warranty as standard. Not that we’re short for choice in the world of 992s; closer to home, Litchfield has already produced its own enhancements for the 992 Carrera S models, upping output of the flat-six to 580hp for a very reasonable £1,194 including installation costs.
