We all know, of course, that the X1/9 was a beautiful mid-engined, two-seater sports car designed by Bertone and produced by Fiat between 1972 and 1982. In 1973, however, Abarth stepped in to develop the X1/9 Prototipo, intended to compete in the newly formed World Rally Championship.
As it transpired, however, Fiat opted to campaign the 131 Abarth in the WRC instead, much to the frustration of those who had seen the wild Prototipo during '73 in its development rallies. With the cars typically making around 200hp and weighing 750kg, it's easy to see how they were fan favourites.
Despite the colour scheme, this X1/9 is not a Prototipo, but it goes to show how much affection there was for the car that regular rally versions were built in homage to it. Having spent much of its life in Italy, and then a few years in France, this little 1.3-litre X1/9 is now in the UK, MOT'd and registered and ready to race. And who wouldn't jump at the idea of a sprint, hillclimb or rally in something that looks as good as this?
Moreover, despite its fairly modest 1.3-litre capacity, the X1/9 is one of the most intense, visceral and exciting sports car experiences you'll find anywhere. But more of that over the weekend. Here's the wallpaper until then!
