Mercedes tried to pension off the G-Class with the GL in 2007, but the old box was too popular (and profitable) to end up on the scrap heap. The W463 Geländewagen, introduced in 1990, turned a rugged utility vehicle into a luxury SUV without abandoning the engineering that made it so capable. Three locking differentials sat beneath a cabin trimmed in wood and leather: an unlikely combination, but central to its appeal.

Its utilitarian origins remained obvious on the road. The ride was firm, the steering heavy and the upright body noisy at speed. Yet those shortcomings came with a convincing sense of solidity. Whether fitted with the OM606 straight-six turbodiesel or the 5.0-litre petrol V8, the G felt engineered for longevity. Mercedes continued to refine it, keeping the underlying design viable long after many of its contemporaries had disappeared.

Hand-built and remarkably substantial, the W463 offered something more conventional luxury SUVs struggled to match. Its commanding driving position, unmistakable shape and serious off-road hardware gave it a character of its own, while the plush cabin broadened its appeal. The result was neither the most polished luxury car nor the easiest off-roader to live with, but a distinctive and durable blend of both.
