Hmm. Had a PPI on a car today from a reputable specialist in Scotland. Car is £12.5k. Lower mileage, no replacement engine (but close to me), GT3 aero kit. No bore score (had them checked).

Report -

Air Con inoperable (needs condensers and the pipe on the drivers side sill has been pinched)
Coolant Pressure Clips are corroded, some need replacing, small coolant leaks
Chain tensioners need replacing - 1 is leaking (bank 2), others are corroded
Sweat from RMS area
Bushes on coffin arms are de laminating but no play yet
Oil leak at gearbox sump gasket
Front bump stops perished
New front shocks with lowering springs, rears need doing
Small amount of corrosion on the underside of the body, not structural (and fairly common in Scotland)
Due major service
Wheels need a refurb (on the inside, the outside looks fine)
Slow puncture on the rear tyre, and Pilot Sports on Rear, Primacy 4 on the front.

That is the cliff notes version. Other bits and bobs, but nothing else major or unexpected on a 20+ year old car. For the chain tensioners and coolant leaks etc, quoted £700 or so to deal with. They were not concerned about the sweat from the RMS and in chatting, they do fit Hartech replacement engines and even have a few on the shelf.

Would deal with the aircon myself, probably. At the very least the condensers, they do not look hard to replace.

I really only looked at this because it was pretty close to me (and the aero kit), unlike almost ALL the others, and it drove well and seemed reasonable for the age.

Hmm.
Sounds like fairly typical 996 stuff. Doesn’t seem like any show stoppers at that sort of money.

Yeah, nothing major in there… though fixing all the small stuff soon adds up.

One thing I’d be conscious of (based on my own experience) is rust… my cills looked fine, despite quite a bit of corrosion on the chassis legs. But once we took the end caps off we found the rear of both cills completely rusty… I’d be having a look for anything the aero kit might be hiding!

An interesting aside…
Had a chat with the guy who’s prepping mine pre bringing it down here later in the year.

I asked him to change the clutch as the gearbox is out for some other bits… He said the old one shows no signs of damage, and is just evenly worn. I reckon 230k miles on 2 clutches is pretty impressive. If only tyres lasted as long.

I’ve been racking my brain, reputable specialists selling £12k 996 in Scotland, can’t think who?

I love the paintwork, could live with interior.

MOT history is patchier than might be desired…

Can you share the name of the specialist as I am also in Scotland and actively looking - Porsche novice and ploughing through this thread from page 1 to absorb as much as I can!

Well..have probably made a mistake, but bought it. Initially listed at £13,800. Indicated they would take £12,500 and after the inspection negotiated it down to £11,500.

Good man

You going to be dealing with any of the little issues or just driving the thing?

A couple of the bits, will sort the chain tensioners, leaks etc and then just drive it. Might look for different wheels and will consider suspension options. I had put the Koni Active Shocks on my Boxster and it does seem to be a popular option for a 911 as well so will see. That won't be until next year most likely, need to get the TVR gone as well!

From the pic above I'd say it looks very low so I'm assuming it's been deliberately lowered. So bear that in mind if replacing springs because it might result in a higher ride height.

Those look like OE so-called MY02 wheels - very lightweight for an 18, and an excellent driver's choice. Get them painted a lighter colour, and you'll see how gorgeous they look. (They should be the 8J 10J versions on a 996)

Best OE wheel for the N/B cars IMO (but I’m biased) and the 10” rears are the lightest OE 10” x 18” 996 wheels, and the 8” fronts are 400g off being so.
They do look better painted silver though :

Aahh, ok. One has been repaired, which is why I was considering replacing, but will get them refurbed (or at least looked at).

Definitely agree they look better in a lighter colour.

Yes, it has. It is a bit odd - new Bilsteins at the front with Eibach springs, but didn't refresh the rear. The cheapest is likely Bilsteins at the back with Eibach springs, but was considering the Koni's on standard springs.

Could be a good buy at that price smile Enjoy it.
Technically those are the “wrong” aero side skirts, they’re the softer curved Mk 1 996 items, as opposed to the harder edged Mk2 items used on 996.2 GT3 :

Thanks for that slippydiff, I’d never noticed there were different style side skirts before (my 2003 MY04 factory aero has the gen 2 style, with retrofit 17” alloys - don’t listen to the hatersbiggrin)

Monster, your list of jobs from the PPI seems quite good, i’d suspect most at this price point will have similar, and a good plan to address some and ignore the restthumbup
