Am I the only person who thinks this is a complete waste of time? The camera will be replaced, at our (the taxpayer's) cost and the perpetrator risks a criminal record, large fine and prison if he gets caught. How does anybody benefit?

Destroying cameras is a waste of time, energy and money. What we need to destroy is the political climate that has allowed them to proliferate. We need to combat them with brains, not brawn.

There is something to be said for a combination of both qualities, depending on the circumstances.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Only if you've recently moved to Australia.

Its nice to know there is still some civic pride . Its a shame he didn't get away with it though . Here they are at accident "Blackspots" like behind the Bus shelter or a Tree ! Still the written test is comprehensive , dosent matter if you can drive though but that involves planning & thought - and doesen't bring in the revenue!

Mon Ami, the money for replacements comes out of the budget generated by fines, not from the taxpayer.
So by hitting them in this fashion it cuts directly into their profit margins.
The only people who pay are those who got scammed in the first place, and i very much doubt theyd speak harshly of those who went out and whacked a scamera or three...or twenty..

I agree that brains would/could possibly be a better solution, but so far, the only method getting any reporting in the press is the D/A method.
Brains only goes so far when youre faced with these kinds of bullyboys, profit is king in their world.
Remove that and theyre dead in the water.

The criminal record comment: I agree. These people risk a lot in the name of freedom (for thats what it is theyre fighting for) and its a pity more motorists/drivers didnt take up the struggle.
Sometimes you have to fight the enemy in an unorthodox way to gain the upper hand.

Regards DeltaF.

I understand the arguement about the camera just being replaced at the taxpayer's expense. But what if more people had the balls that this guy has?

If the driving-enthusiast population as a whole, rose up and set about destroying every speed camera in the land, then it would send a pretty strong message to the bureaucrats.

Respect to the man in Perth.

I think a campaign of civil disobedience would be far more effective. If everybody said "sod you, I'm not paying", the whole system would collapse. They certainly couldn't send every speeding offender to prison.

Possibly but they might use the Scandinavian way of doing things and put you on a waiting list for prison, I think it's a wait of a couple of years in Finland before you can do your time.

As a pomgolian now residing in the filthy colonial backwater known as Melbourne, I salute this chap in Perth. I have taken to parking in front of the mobile speed cameras when I see them and flashing my headlights at all oncoming traffic. That gives fellow citizens plenty of time to slow down. If only more civic minded fellows proceeded with this course of action, we would create change and hopefully have a fairer system, last time I checked, Australia had a democratically elected parliment does it not? But with the roads clogged to the hilt with naive L and P platers whos only experience of driving before hand was Gran Torismo 3, then daddy dearest buys them a new car/HSV/ferrari then is on the late news crying because they had the "4 oclock knock" I blame retarded parents and showboat politicians for the deaths on our roads here. and bent criminals running the whole system! Damn Convicts!!! Driving used to be a joy, but I guess Toad of Toad Hall had his fun back then eh

I've taken to doing this in Adelaide and as a pomme I find it harder to avoid fines when they move around and park in areas that are safe to drive over 50kph or whatever. It is actually illegal to flash your lights however when I see the cops setting up radars I usually sound the horn to wake them up (again illegal).

Funny they had a thing on the tv tonight about the UK professor that put a global speed limiter in your car so you can't speed with a red button on the steering wheel for when you have to use the accelerator to save lives <rolls eyes>

When I got flashed two months ago in the rain at 9pm I went up to the car and glared at the guy until he drove off, never got the ticket either.

There have been a few here destroyed in similar fashion. Apparently we have the worst scamera big brothers in the world with 1 in 4 West Australian's receiving a fine every year on average.

Oh and it's made no difference whatsoever to road safety. The young and inexperienced still kill pedestrians, the fatigued drivers still kill those in oncoming traffic, the odd unlucky person is still killed when a roo jumps at you, the financially chalenged still kill themselves in a 30mph incident because the car they are in falls apart and the seatbelts rip courtesy of no yearly inspections (mot), many are killed as a result of lorries shedding loads as there are no police on the roads to fine this type of thing, someone was recently killed because the driver behind was blinded by the sun, someone else when traffic lights failed and a truck went straight through - wouldn't have happened if it was a roundabout but most sandgropers can't work out which way to go round.

Oh and we also have something like 46,000 currently disqualified drivers from a driving population of 1 million. If it wasn't for the fact most of them lost it for being 7km over the limit on a dry, clear dual carrigeway you would be worried about driving with them on the road. Good luck to them, they are unlikely to get caught as there are no police actually patrolling the roads.

A mate of mine recently had his car broken into on a public holiday. He drove 10 minutes to a police station and passed 3 scameras and when he got there a sign said closed today due to understaffing.

Good Luck to them? Good luck? What to drivers who are now driving with no insurance?

Leave alone this crap about drivers who are 7km over the limit...The majority of disq drivers are due to drink driving, repeated no insurance and other such crimes. The excessive speed people only amount to a very small number of disq drivers and their bans are usually over a short period of times...

Oh...you'd be banging on the door of the empty police station if one of these drivers damaged your car or mowed down your loved ones, wouldn't you?

Well done to him, glad to see we aint the only country swamped in this absolute crap.

Never thought I would vote in my life because of various political views but after hearing somewhere that the conservatives will bring down a lot of the speed camera's I will definatly be voting, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyway, blow em all up and bring back some traffic cops. Was going down a 50 A road last night, in the inside lane doing about 70, clear road, car comes up behind me and the blue xenons made me slow down to around 60, he indicates out and I realise its a traffic car, they pause next to me, glance in and drive off. Because I wasnt a threat and was driving safely. Gatso = £60 and 3 points please.

One thing though Street, do you realise the fear and absolute dread you put in some people????

When I saw that car behind me legs went to jelly, my heart rate must have trebled and I was instantly drenched in sweat.

The one time I've been pulled I was panicking so much I couldnt get my keys out the ignition and couldnt remember my name or address.

Turns out it was a lovely woman policeman who indeed ticketed me but apologised for keeping me and complimented me on my car.

That's why police do a better job of policing the roads - all a camera does is piss you off, it does nothing to educate you. No one ever likes being given a ticket, but generally most people who get one in person admit it's a fair cop, whereas no one I know says that about a camera ticket cos they can always "convince" the listener, and themselves, that where THEY were speeding was totally safe.

But in Oz, that's not a crime. You don't have to have insurance, cos TPFT is included in fuel tax IIRC.

So much more civilised.....
