hi - I have to say that the old view of 100 is no faster than 60 is a bit old hat. On a 100 mile trip, that would take 100 minutes at 60mph, I would expect to do that in 60 minutes at 100mph.... which is about when the tank empties.

Soooooooo. Maybe it applies to cages, but certainly doesn't to bikes. Unless you get nicked of course, which tends to add to the journey time.

I find that choosing the correct lane at roundabouts makes a huge difference when in car, speed a bit less so. But it does add up to a lot of minutes over a long journey. The maths is undeniable !

The only time I have driven at 70 on a motorway for any length of time was during the fuel protests (65 mpg in the old diesel) but it is boring normally, the only reason it was less boring then was that everyone else was doing 50

We are still talking minutes.....m i n u t e s

The things we waste in the bog, on the phone to mother-in-law, in queues etc etc...but with the risk of points, fines etc etc.

How many journeys really really need to be made quickly?

But if 100mph is safe on a motorway, why shouldnt we able to do it to save those extra 40 minutes????

Who has the right to tell me what speed I can safely drive at. If my dad was in the car with me and at 100 said to me "you dont feel safe at this speed, slow down" then I would feel very embaressed and slow dont. I dont do 70mph to be safe or avoid killing anybody, I do it because I am forced to by stupid laws.

Probably none but how much time do you spend working to pay for petrol for unnecessary (just for fun)driving ? do you really need the cars/bikes you have. Wouldn't an old volvo estate be more practical?

Why do it, well, as a great philosopher once said:

Did 60-65 following an in-law yesterday for around 8 miles and it is surprising just how much slower you are going than the majority of other road users. You are right regarding trucks we had a fair number (5 or 6) overtake us.

They are usually foreigners without the same restrictions.

Or 7.5 tonners - some can be huge.

I spoke to our leading scientist involved in sleep and road safety. (Professor Horne) He told me that there are "hundreds" of papers regarding the relationship between concentration and work rate. Broadly if work rate is too low we don't concentrate well. If work rate is too high we can't keep up.

Every driver knows that there's a relationship between speed and work rate.

Professor Horne also said that there was no research into any resultant relationship between speed and sleepiness or loss of concentration.

I carried out a survey of Safe Speed visitors and 45 out of 48 respondents (94%) reported that their concentration would be affected by low speeds.

See: www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=117

(I did get an email reply from Professor Horne, and I published it. Next thing I know he's on the phone asking me to remove it because he's employed by the Government!)

Myth? I should coco.

Was that 60 on a gps? 60 on your speedo could easily be as low as 54mph true speed. The trucks will be doing 56mph true speed.

Not quite trooper, most trucks are set between 85-90 kmh 90 being the maximum. My gps last week told me that of the three trucks I drove, one did 53 mph, the other two 52 mph. All indicated higher speeds, even though tachos are supposed to be highly calibrated.

Remaining alert is a worry..............

So the Professor says no, you and your anti-camera mates say yes.
I have seen you bleat on about misuse of statistics and figures but to claim a 94% figure for a driver concentration/speed correlation with 48 ever so slightly biased respondents typifies your preconceived b****cks "research". I was trying to be kind, honest, but this is well deserved derision. I'm writing to the Sun, I think that's where you and it will be appreciated!

The reason why you shouldn't be able to do it is because a lot of drivers are driving quite safely using the speed limit as their ceiling (not target) speed.
Why don't you feel embarresed by the drivers around you who are saying we feel uncomfortable because of the 100mph you are using in their company? It's the same thing. Perhaps they aren't as dear to you as your dad s their lives don't quite count as much.
Who has the right to tell you? The government, that's who. if you want to live somewhere that doesn't quite practice democracy then move, there are plenty countrys that would accept you.

hello destroyer,

who tells me that I have the right to be policed by criminals?. The government. Speeding is a criminal act (aparently) and there are many many police staff (including the police suite in charge of road policing from manchester caught doing 104MPH who deemed it to be safe). So do you feel comfortable being policed by criminals?.

Of course you don't, and of course they aren't.

Do you have a car destroyer?, and if so, what day do you drive it on?. NO, or YES and SUNDAY.

For your info, I now have cruise control and do EXACTLY 70MPH on my drive to work. Don't pay much attention to the road as my concentration drifts, but I'm clearly driving safely as I'm not speeding.

Then I take the car (a chipped diesel golf with more torque than a ferrari 360) up to stupendous speeds round blind bends on country roads, just to be rebelious. And I'm not realy a rebelious person.
Why do I do that?, I never used to.
Perhaps most people, when oppressed, feel the need to blow off steam from time to time.

Also,
I am constantly annoyed by the way the 'pro camera' lot depict 'you anti camera lot and your mates' as if we were a small bunch of unemployed thugs in a pub.
I work in an industry that is, to say the least, 'respectful' My friends and colleagues/wives of colleagues also work in other industries that are also respectful. I have met absoluely no one, not ever, that think speed cameras are not a money making racket. Most will say that they could be used safely, but all think they are about revenue.
A disturbing number of these people, including myself now have points on the licenses for 'offences' that they feel very aggrieved about. These are also people who have never had any accidents, in most cases in decades of driving.
What are your views on this Destroyer??

I live in Edinburgh, and often visit friends and relatives in the south of England. Most of my motorway journeys therefore involve a long distance, and it is not unknown for me to drive 400 miles without even a stop for fuel (strong bladder me !) I find at 85-90 I concentrate better,so drive more safely, am doing the same sort of speed as the rest of the traffic, and probably save 30-40 minutes on the total journey time. Why would I want to drive at 70 ?

For some strange reason I decided to stick to 70-75 mph last night on a stretch of motorway which normally averages 90-95. Just as well as there were a couple of cars ticketing ALL the fast drivers

I wonder why?
Did you happen to ask 45 people that like to drive faster than they legally should ?
