So this is kicking in very soon. Oh well.

Christ! I'd better buy the countermeasures soon then.

How in heaven's name due you crash on the M4. Its straight. The surface is fantastic. You have to be an utter tool. And because a few of our population are, in fact, utter tools - the rest of us will now need to deal with the bleedin' cameras. Grrrrr!

The M4 has a record of accidents but I have never seen one casued by speeding. The latest was a lorry load of new cars on its side this week. As usual the accident happened early hours, perhaps the driver was sleepy. Most accidents I am aware of are early morning and involve lorries. But why let the facts get in the way of a good revenue seam, it will rake in millions with out a doubt.

Yeah, I got caught in that one - a very strange accident actually, a car transported on its side, crushing the central reservation?

A license to print money then as the casualty figures will only go up.

Sadly lots of people seem to think they can change lanes without indicating or apparently checking their mirrors I remember one situation where I was overtaking a number of cars (granted speeding at around 80/85) and a Picasso cut me up with very little breaking distance left for me, although the cloud of smoke from my tyres did encourage him to reconsider his manouvre.
I commute around 2 to 3 times a month from J15 to Carmarthen and the Swindon cameras surprised me slightly but waas glad when they dissappeared. The Port Talbot ones have always annoyed me greatly 50mph on a motorway...

I've said it before, I'll say it again: the slower you go the longer you spend alongside vehicles like this when overtaking, the more likely you are to come a cropper if something out-the-ordinary happens!

I bet one of Bliar's bent statisticians counts each car on the transporter and records it as a multi-vehicle crash - Streaky

No fixed cameras on the motorway?

Come to London much?

There are 5 between J6 and J1 of the eastbound M4 and one eastbound and one westbound on the M4 past Swansea

Hi Plotloss......5?? Are you sure? I know about the one on the slip road to the A312 exit after heathrow, and the one just before the elevated section. Where are the others?? My origin B2 doesn't pick them up and I've never been done.

Cheers mate,
J.

yeah, if they want to bring down the accident figures on the M4 - then they just need to sort out the drainage issue...

It is the worst road in the rain, spray makes visibility awful!

Went past the ones between J18/19 yesterday, looks like they are starting the roadworks soon.

Seem to have caught out the guy in the blue Pug 406 Coupé who had taken exception at me overtaking him at earlier on the M5 and then tried to race me to over 1XX speeds, so let him go - come past the roadworks on the M4 and he'd stacked it into the cones near the camera which still had the hood on

The free Metro paper today states that not only will there be cameras that will dish out fixed penalties for as little as 9mph overthe limit, but also Thames Valley Police are piloting a scheme where officers must tally up 200 points a month. The way they can do this is: -

Cathcing a rapist or burglar 10 points
Cathcing a driver using a mobile 5 points
Catching a driver not wearing a seatbelt 5 points
Cathcing an illegal immigrant 2 points

So clearly their focus will be on the "serious" offences of using a mobile or not wearing a seatbelt whilst driving.

Bearing in mind the M4 is partly within the TVP region, it will be a dangerous place to be!

I commuted from Maidenhead to Bristol every day for a year and almost all the accidents I saw were from the results of punctures, either from worn tyres or incorrect tyre pressures. Couldn't see one that appeared to be attributable to speed directly.

It's about time motorway speed limits were reviewed. I cannot understand why the powers that be have not worked this out yet. It seems that we allow too many imbeciles to hold positions of power in this country.

Maybe the next reaction from the weird minority groups will be the same as for guns, i.e. ban cars outright! :-)

On the continent for as long as I can recall it's been 130/110 kmh, or 82mph/68mph (dry and wet speeds).

This is eminently reasonable.

Is that thing you wrote about points true ?

I assumed it was satire because the ideas were so stupid, inept and ridiculous - but I've just seen same on Teletext news.

Says much about Plod's priorities, doesn't it

I vote that everyone boycotts the M4 between Hungerford and Bath in protest at this continued persecution of the mototrist.

No traffic equals to revenue.

We've all a got to start fighting back at some point. This nonsense cannot be allowed to continue. I will start the ball rolling then and pledge not use the M4 in this area unless absolutely necessary for thr forseable future i.e. until the Scamera vans are removed. It'll be tough, and a right royal pain in the arse at times but I'll do it...

I hope others will follow suit.

Labour's parliamentary candidate for North Wiltshire is David Nash. He says hardly a week goes by without there being an accident between the two junctions.

"Bearing in mind the motorway is virtually straight the only reason for this has to be speed therefore I fully support the introduction of speed cameras on this stretch,"

So if the road is virtually straight, how does speed cause accidents ?

The Tories candidate James Gray said :-

"The M4 is virtually straight between those junctions," said Mr Gray.

"I cannot think of any dangerous stretches. I am not aware of any safety reason why cameras should be there."

As far as Labour is concerned it is only about revenue

Don't know if there are actually any cameras up there, but the M180 has loads of permanent gatso warning signs. Presumably they're scamming from the bridges up there? Stupid really, as that has to be one of the emptiest roads in the country! Can't really see how anyone could manage to crash on it, as there is never any other traffic, unless you've dozed off, in which case a warning sign is really helpful...

They zap from the opposite side of the M/way and send out tickets starting at 79mph.

I got one. I couldn't remember who was driving. Case was dropped in Scunthorpe Mags Court.

Beggars belief, doesn't it? Surely even an MP must have been born with some sense? Let's think of some of the causes of accidents (notice, not KSIs, just accidents) on a straight motorway:

1) panic braking
2) tailgating
3) changing lanes without indicating
4) looking out for hidden speed cameras
5) daydreaming
6) sleeping
7) driving too fast for the conditions but below the limit
8) mechanical faults.

And that's before you get into specifics like drink, drugs, undertaking/cutting up. Why does everything have to come down to spin and soundbites? Why can't we have a reasoned debate? Because most people are too thick, or what? There ought to be a minimum IQ level for MPs -- and voters.
