The smell of weed.

I'm glad I don't live in close proximity to anyone who wasn't taught enough Classical Greek not to know that "hoi" already means "the", so you don't need to repeat it.
Technically correct, if you're Greek, but such pedantry is debatable when using it in English.Does the River Avon upset you?
You need to consider if you do anything that could bother them, do you have kids that make noise in the garden, pets that could bother them, friends round and make noise in the garden, and any other number of things.
No point in complaining if its just going to cause a long term issue with your neighbours.

Assuming you aren't using the word "chronic" in the early-90s rap meaning of the word (when the Lakers beat the Supersonics), it is funny that as a society we rarely say "marijuana addict". Heroine addict, cocaine addict, alcoholic, adrenaline junky...
I've had people tell me that marijuana isn't addictive, but from what I've seen I think it most definitely is, and a quick Google reveals that authorities on the matter also think it is.
It doesn't affect much, I'm not suggesting we point at our neighbours in the street and chant "Drug addict! Drug addict! Slave to narcotics!" but it is peculiar we don't say marijuana addict.
My special interest during my degree and subsequent research was the effects of delta9-THC and CBD (i.e. Cannabis ssp) on the brain; mostly the central executive and visuospatial working memory. Cannabis and its constituent pharmacology is not physically addictive, which is why people have told you that. It can be mentally/psychologically addictive in the same way as driving, having a favourite pair of socks or visiting the same shop every day. It is not, however, physically addictive in the way other dopaminergic drugs (like cocaine) are. You won't withdraw from weed like you would from harder drugs like caffeine (see what I did there?). Have a quiet word with your neighbour and let him know the smell troubles you or that your kids are asking questions or something. Unlike alcohol or caffeine addicts, stoners, as a rule, don't tend to be a belligerent bunch. They're too busy feeling chilled.

If you just speak to them like grown ups and respectfully explain the issue, they may just do something to resolve it amicably? They may simply be unaware that the stench is causing an issue to others and prefer not to bring attention to themselves by letting it continue.
This.Just speak to them, people smoking weed are usually pretty relaxed.

Everyone seems sympathetic to the smoker, but bare in mind these people then jump in their car and drive. Are you happy their driving skills are affected?
Id rather a stoned driver behind me than a pissed driver. That's for sure. When high, one only wants to drive 20 mph, as opposed to the overestimation of coherent ability a drunk person has. NickCQ said:

I'm not sure that " wasn't taught enough Classical Greek not to know " is the correct way to convey that sentiment. I think the " not "is superfluous. Perhaps it isn't, but it sounds wrong......in which case, if I'm wrong, I qualify for hoi polloi and you can add me to the list of peeps you're fortunate enough not live in close proximity to. Someone who invents weed that’s flavoured/ scented as vapes are will make a fortune lol.
Been done.https://cannabistraininguniversity.com/blog/mariju...
Not sure which one I'll be growing, there are so many choices.
The smell is quite sickly and I think it grates not just because of this but also because of the illegalities
It winds me right up when I go for a nice walk and keep coming across wafts of the putrid smell as I go along. I don’t want to smell it and certainly don’t want to breathe any of it in
Luckily I can’t smell it from anywhere while in the garden but did at a house I lived in a few years ago and I do feel the OP’s pain. We talked many times about what to about the smell at our old house but they certainly weren’t the friendly approachable type and at the end of the day had to coexist and you do hear plenty of stories about neighbour disputes escalating. Before we actually did get around to deciding to do anything or not we moved house anyway (not because of that though)

Cigars would smell a hell of a lot worse and be totally legal.
Cigars don't smell anywhere near as bad as weed.I don't smoke weed (or at all) but it generally smells fairly pleasant and aromatic to me?

The other half lives in a terrace house. The bloke who lives 3 houses along is a chronic user.
The smell even comes into the house even though the windows are shut, when he smokes it in the back garden.
He has no lawn or plants but has 4 sheds. One of them never has frost or snow settle on it and it emits a strange light from the top vent.
He drives as part of his job, servicing scanning equipment in hospitals.
It is a rancid stinky stench.
If they like the smell so much, why can't they smoke it indoors?
Whereabouts is this? Asking for a friend. The smell even comes into the house even though the windows are shut, when he smokes it in the back garden.
