Its a good proposal.Makes everyone play by the same rules - creates more order on the roads - protects bikers.
My new rule would be to make lane merges so that the person in the inside lane has priority.
(ie. at the end of a dial carriageway the person who doesn't follow the highway code in ensuring there is a clear patch of space in front of the vehicle in front and tries to push in , then has to give way and pull in behind)
My other new rule would be to make all roundabouts no more than two lanes - so that the highway code then makes sense.
An addition to this rule would be to ban lane changing at the exit point of a roundabout - which stupidly the highway code currently promotes/allows.

This is also going to slow down the traffic and increase congestion. Lane controlled roundabouts do work, as long as people do what the lanes say.Atomic12C said:

Pretty sure the highway code only allows this in as much as it allows any lane change - i.e. with the proviso that the lane you're changing in to is clear.I'm in agreement that not that much needs changing if some of the existing rules were enforced.
But in the spirit of the thread.
Merge points for roadworks to straddle both lanes to encourage proper 'zip' merging rather than the 'you're pushing into my lane' mentality. Or just some education on the current system.

My suggestion - manufactures to be forced to include programming to reduce engine power to 25% of their normal output when fog lights are turned on. Rationale - if weather conditions are genuinely bad enough to need them then reduced power should be fine, choose to turn them on when they are not needed and pay the price in strangled performance.
Plus massive fines/points for any kind of tampering with the system in terms of remapping/rewiring.

Pensioners must re sit their driving test every other year. Fail your test, license revoked for 3 months while you have driving instruction. Fail it three times in a row, license revoked indefinitely.
I'd also ban all motorbikes, just because one of them wrote my car off a few years ago and I'm a spiteful bd

Very true.But from what I see more regularly than not is a total lack of respect for this current allowance in the 'rules'.
It seems unfortunately that its more of a majority these days that give a total of zero fecks - putting others at risk and on numerous occasions from what I have witnessed, causing damage and then simply driving off.

But you're still using a mobile phone, which people want to ban.Reaction time test as part of the driving test and fines for taking too long to move when lights go green. The number of traffic queues I see that could be halved in length if people reacted to lights and the car in front moving in a timely fashion is massive. It's extremely annoying to miss a set of lights because the person in front can't be bothered to pay attention to lights or the person in front of them.

Do people see it as a lane change though - or do they just see it as exiting the roundabout into a valid lane? The number of people I see doing this (cutting up other cars in the process) leads me to believe it is the latter in many cases.Regular driving competency testing at least.
Potentially a test of your driving abilities every X number of years, you receive a rating of 0-10 which then perhaps influences your insurance costs (among other criteria of course). If you want to improve your score, you can take a improvement course that gives you a brush up of your driving skills. Like Pass Plus for divs!

I'm sure this won't be popular, but hey ho. I'd like to see a basic cycling test/license introduced, and if you haven't passed one you can't ride on the road. Given half the cycle paths round here are just a line painted on the pavement, I'd also like to see the non-professional cyclists restricted to the pavement. Obviously an element of common sense is involved here (get off your bike if the pavement is busy, don't ride so fast you can't stop if someone comes out of their front door etc), so I can't see it ever taking off lol.
We have speed cameras and stop signal cameras - but why no cameras monitoring junctions with mandatory direction arrows?

Most traffic was turning right into Harlow and thus the right hand lane used to back up. Many drivers would dart up the left lane - then indicate right as soon as they got onto the roundabout, pushing in and causing gridlock on the roundabout as well as causing the right hand lane to back up even more.
It's not like these were inexperienced drivers or people who didn't know the area - you'd see the same arrogant pricks doing the same thing every day.
Doing this should easily attract 3 points and a £60 fine.

Tightening down of in car tech that distracts the driver, you don’t really need apps in a car it’s just another mobile phone problem that won’t be looked into untill it’s to late,

They do have cycling proficiency at school (I did it over 30 years ago) - but it's not mandatory.
