Quite simply, us, the general public cannot be allowed to drive about at what speeds we like as a large percentage of us are inexperience, unskilled and travel in unsuitable vehicles.

OK but why can we not have some more leeway for those (whether or not that would include me) who can demonstrate a sufficient level of ability in their use of speed? I would be very happy to go for an IAM or RoSPA advanced test if it meant a satisfactory performance relieved me of the need to comply with the NSL. That would, in my view, be an advanced driver status worthy of the name and one that I feel would be preserved with great pride by a successful candidate. There's no certainty as to the verdict if I were to take such a test of course, and I might be in for a bit of a shock, but that would be a fair way of doing things.

In principle there is no difference between this concept and the system that grants one a full licence in the first place, and it surely ought to be possible to find some way of operating such a system.

Well it should be quite clear by now that very many of us do not respect this aspect of the law, and there is IMHO a good case to be made for changing it. I agree that as it stands we break the law at our peril, but why should anyone have to move to another country in their search for commonsense. Such a proposition is quite ridiculous, not to say offensive. Never mind about other countries, what we should do is fight to make things the way we believe is right in our own country.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

You missed another scenario.

Bad laws are universally ignored and either not enforced or repealed...........

I did both and they are thanks.

Also the police here are bloody marvelous as well - they have some discretion and generally don't bother with slightly speeding drivers who are not pissed and have decent cars.

The scameras are the culprits.

The police here can't strike either but they can work to rule and do quite often. All they do is refuse to issue scamera tickets. Within a day or two everyones back round the table because the state govt can't afford for the fines to go uncollected.

Road safety my arse - revenue raising, pure and simple.

and I still say well done to the guy.

You can send petitions and vote how you like but the revenue scameras bring in is now an essential part of the policing budget and they are here to stay no matter what.

Unless of course motorists keep smashing them.

Nothing against speed limits myself - I generally obey them, just object to being fined for a few k's over a 60 limit when I thought it was 70 or losing my license because I did 140 for 100 yards on a clear dual carrigeway after the two Hyundai drivers in front have decided to finally drive at 60 in the same lane rather than blocking both.

Purely hypothetical scenarios BTW.
