Coming home in the dark tonight I pulled out to overtake a long line of cars in an ultra safe, mile straight section of road on the A41 south of Chester, only to find a police V70 tucked up in the middle. The line of cars I was in / following on the overtake all bottled it or tucked in before they got to the police, which left yours truly with the choice of overtaking them at in excess of nsl, tucking in behind them and looking a fool, or being an idiot and dangerously squeezing in further back in the line of traffic. I tucked in safely but a little embarrassed behind the police and followed behind the 50mph driver at the front, for the next 2 miles.

Here we go I thought.

We got to a roundabout, where I needed to turn and after I indicated, the police came too, straight I'm front of me. As we turned, their blue lights came on and I pulled up behind them. Annoyed, as if they had not been there, everyone would have been safer as there would have been no commotion, and the overtakes would have happened safely. Their presence had caused all sorts of antics, which was in fact more dangerous.

The copper got out and walked to a car in front of them. Oh god, I thought. Have they pulled over two of us. All very confusing. I thought, best not hang around and spoil the party, and as I drove off, the driver of the police car got out, so I stopped, and very cheerily he asked was I okay? I said I thought that he had pulled me over and he said, none of the sort and to have a good evening... A lovely chap with good news to bring!

So, with my innocent (!) close shave, I wondered has anyone else been the subject of being accidently pulled over or offering themselves up, only to be told that they are not wanted???!

Not directly, but I've had a few 'moments' when I've noticed the blues-and-twos descending on me at speed and wondered "me - orrr...." wink

I was pulled over once because the policeman wanted to know more about the bikes I had on the roof.
He was Mountain biker like myself and liked the look of them. Very odd, but we had a good chat and then waved me off.

Didn't hear him on the radio or anything either, so don't think he was waiting to get some info across while talking.

A long time ago, pre sat nav days, I was looking for an industrial premises in Wolverhampton, at night.

I saw a parked `police car, and drove around a little one way system to get to them, parked my car near them, and got out ,but before I could ask my fsq, they asked me if I'd come to surrender, I'd driven through some no entry signs and thus the wrong way up a one way street for about fifteen yards to get to them !

They laughed at my embarrassment, gave me the directions I needed, and let me go on my way ..... the correct way down the one way street.

Lets see a scamera do that !

If you drive a seriously nice or rare car, you can expect to be pulled over from time to time so they can take a look/have a chat etc. etc.

If you were to question it, they'd just say you were driving carelessly and you can hardly argue, can you?

Take it as flattery I guess - breaks the boredom for them and it's good that they spend time with people who aren't venal, lying scumbags from time to time smile

Maybe if you lived out in the sticks otherwise they'd have an harassment charge heading their way.

When I was 16 on my 50cc Bike, I evaded what could have been a fatal crash. A biker cop saw everything, he pulled me and the two cars over and made them apologies to me, then complimented me on my skill biggrin Nice Mr Policeman smile

My friend had a mustang identical to the one Steve McQueen drove in bullet.

He lost count count of the times he was pulled by the police for a chat about his car.

Been travelling the same road for 5 years. Not once seen a police car on it. Long straight road but a few houses dotted along the 2 mile stretch so been given a 30mph limit all the way from the bypass. Scooting home one night, got to a small rise in the road at about 50mph, saw the reflective jackets at the side of the road and I pulled the brakes on. Copper further up pulled me in and asked if I was aware of the speed limit. 40mph? I replied in a tone more suited to a question than an answer. He informed me that it was 30mph then called back to his colleagues to determine what they had "clocked" me at. They had seen 41 on the dial but couldn't get an accurate reading. I was told to be more aware of the speed restrictions in future and to have a safe journey home. Thank you mr policeman.

OP, I guess if nothing else you can be glad that you pulled in when you did - otherwise you'd almost certainly have been the one the copper was after! hehe

Never had any near misses myself, although I was going down an otherwise empty motorway at rather high speeds alongside a guy in an A6 for a couple of miles, each of us gradually getting quicker, and a dark Volvo joined in. It took me a moment or two to process the significance of this information, but I then backed off rather a lot and let the other Audi carry on with him!

I had a Police car pull up behind me at a set of lights the other day, when I looked in my mirror and saw it, for some bizarre reason I had a flash of panic!

No idea why, I've done nothing naughty to warrant a pull. I guess a healthy fear of the law was instilled in me from a young age!

A few years ago, I came out to to my S14a 200SX to find two coppers stood next to it. Wondering what on Earth was going on, I approached them I saw they were using my car as cover whilst they were pointing their ray-gun down the road checking speeds.

When I opened the car and went to get in, one of the coppers commented on how nice the car was, and that he used to have one, although he traded it in for a motorbike as it scared him! A 200SX more scary than a bike? Go figure.

Not sure it fits here but when i passed my test in 95 i had fitted an after market head unit, the ones where the whole head unit comes out by pulling a handle on the stereo, not just the face.
Well i had it in a case with a strap which went over your head and fitted under your arm for safety, can you see where this is going i think hahhaaa

Anyway,

I walked out of the post office reaching inside of the case putting money in it, i hadnt noticed the copper following me.

He went round one way as i went another to the back of the post office where my astra was parked, before i could get into the car i heard shouting

" dont move, DONT MOVE, keep still " said the copper

i was like "what , why, eh! "

copper thought i had a gun in the case which sat under my arm, he thought i had robbed the post office hahahaaaa, i just pulled the stereo out and turned the case upside down. All was good, not sure what he would of done if it was a gun, he had nothing but a baton thing.

In South Africa (where I went to uni) police road blocks were common but, as a student, even when you're sober as a judge (granted, not that often) and are well inside the speed limit, coming around a bend to be met by Mr Traffic Orifice can be a bowel loosening moment.

Especially when the other 4 idiots in the car have been drinking since noon and are likely to hurl obscenities through the window in an apparent defense of their designated driver.

Driving home from work. Spotted the police car pull out behind me. As I was on 6 points at the time I was like Driving Miss Daisy. Lights Came on and I pulled in. The young officer poked his head through the window, Said they had reports of a drunk driver in a car like mine. Then just sent me on my way. Very Odd

Riding home to Anglesey after working all week in Sheffield, about 11pm on a deserted A55 near Conwy. Pootling along quite rapidly I caught up rather with BiB sat at 70 in the inside lane. Sat behind them for a few minutes before they flashed their blue lights and waved me past with a cheery thumbs up.

On the other hand, when I was living in the US, my in-laws owned a shopping centre in a bit of a hick town. Was in there one evening when I saw a couple of guys looking very dodgy around the side of one of the shops. A quick phone call to the local police dept. to report it and they told me there was an officer in the parking lot and I was to flash him down. Saw the cop driving towards me so flashed my lights several times and waved my hand out of the window for him to slow down. He screeched to a halt jumped out gun drawn and ordered me out of the truck and put my hands on the bonnet....note to self, don't wave your hand at an American cop in the dark!
