foreign trucks stopping on the hard shoulder - under bridges
Discussion
sorry if this topic has been previously raised.
just wondered what the penalties were. i regularly see foreign registered trucks pulled up on the m25/m1 hard shoulder under bridges, where the motorway has been widened to 4 lanes and the hard shoulder now goes round the otherside of the bridge support, with the curtains drawn and the driver having a nap.
what's the penalty for them: points, fine, warning etc? just wondered, as it seems maddness that it cost millions of pounds from our taxes to widen the motorways and extend the bridges to accomodate this extra lane which they now use to stop for a convenient nap!

What ever it is, it isn't enough of a deterrent! This was a story in our local paper a while back.

^ The driver in this story should be banned from driving. That said the fire brigade need to take a look at their own actions for not just simply dragging the tt out of the cab by his bks and shifting the lorry themselves.http://www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/local/epso...
Foreign truckers simply don't care. They are told to ignore most rules and as many are owner drivers every second counts.
It's like when they take out a car driver. I see left hookers all the time on the hard shoulder with a battered car in front of it.
As I understand it there are hardly any similar accidents in Europe involving UK trucks. So what does that tell you?
Well. Either car drivers don't put themselves in the danger zone or UK truckers are better drivers than those foreign lot.

Or that the number of LHD lorries in the UK far outweighs the number of RHD lorries on the continent. It's like when they take out a car driver. I see left hookers all the time on the hard shoulder with a battered car in front of it.

As soon as there is collision and a tailbacks all the foreign trucks head to the hard shoulder for their 'tacho' breaks. The delays it causes the police/Ambon/fire could cost lives!!
As Furry says up until recently foreign drivers couldn't be fined. Now the money can be taken off them at the roadside as they do in Europe.
The drivers always try the 'tacho' hours excuse, but European regs state they can keep driving to a place of safety to park up in unforeseen circumstances. The French and German police fine the drivers heavily over there for breach of hours.

They should have stopped at the previous one like British lorries do then.
its not just the foreign lorries that do this, i see lots of brit ones too when I'm trying my best to get to the next services for a break or stop early if in a traffic jam. There are far too many fatal accidents on the hard shoulder to be stopping for breaks.

i cases like this i think they should have their wagons taken off them for at least 48 hours.
I like the sound of that. It is a simple and fair punishment that will hit them where it hurts. Could use the time in storage to make sure everything is road legal and do a thorough customs check.Rostfritt said:

Or stopped at the purpose built free parking areas that new European motorways are required to provide, Oh wait ...The new sections of the Bulgarian 'A1', the Trakia motorway, have large parking areas every 50 Km or so, big enough to park 50 trucks on.

Which are apparently required by EQ construction regs.

No expense spared! Almost certainly because we paid for it (with Brussels taking a cut for passing the money on of course). The new sections of the Bulgarian 'A1', the Trakia motorway, have large parking areas every 50 Km or so, big enough to park 50 trucks on.

Surely this is simple. They are breaking the law. Need prosecuting. Agree a quick a easy behavioural 'nudge' would be to inconvenience them to the point where it hurts. Wait until their rest period is over hten make them drive to the next services where their rig is dismantled to check it is road legal (don't make me laugh) and for illegal immigrants etc. Even a few hours will really cost them.
