Supposed to be collecting another old Volvo tomorrow, but after asking for the V5C2 number so we can tax before we do, it turns out the old boy who owns the car hasn't SORN it but also not taxed it.

The numbers we were sent (16 digits) do nothing no matter how you chop and change them, but then I also read that if you had a tax reminder, these numbers wouldn't work anyway.

It was due to be taxed on 1 Aug.

I also picked up the log book / V5C2 of another Volvo I own and on the V5C2 on that, there is no doc ref number at all. It just has the despatch codes and nothing above. That's a 1995 car, the one I want to collect is 1987.

If I risked driving to where the car is, would I need to tax from his reminder (if he has one) or does it have to be in my name for that? If like the Volvo above, there is no ref number on the V5C2 (age related?), can you tax from log book, or is there a name issue again with that?

Basically, I don't want to waste a morning getting there and not being able to get it home!

That's because you were sent the wrong information. The V5C/2 Document Ref. No. is 12 digits, not 16.

Hmmm. Very odd. Is it from one of the old blue V5Cs rather than the current red variety?

If you tax from his reminder (assuming it will even let you) then he will get the refund when the change of keeper takes effect. So, no, not a great idea.

With a valid V5C/2 you should be able to tax it online. The current owner can do the change of keeper by that method as well.
It may alert the DVLA to the fact that he hasn't SORNed or taxed it but that his problem not yours.

If there has been no action with the vehicle for six years or so, then DVLA may have archived the record

It will - insurance is no longer checked at the point of taxing a vehicle.
