Whilst this government has gone out of its way to criminalise speeding, it still has some way to go in comparison to the Commonwealth of Virginia, where anything over 80mph (irrespective of the limit) is deemed Reckless and punishable by up to 12 months in Jail (and they do!), a 6 month ban, up to $2500 fine and points .

Virginia doesn't use speed cameras (yet), instead relying on legions of state troopers to catch motorists for pretty much anything they like. Aside from the RD - Speeding offence, myriad other contraventions could land you a reckless driving ticket including failing to give a signal, failing to stop at a stop sign, inappropriate lane changing amongst many others.

Whilst we complain about speed cameras, Virginia shows what a government can do if it really turns its attention to taking money off motorists - if faced with the choice of jail or a fat fine, which would you take when it comes to plea-bargaining?
