Car broken into. again

2nd time in a month that this has happened - found the alfa unlocked and evidently quickly rifled through. Nothing taken, because just like last time there was nothing to take.
Option a) contact the police, be treated like a time waster, be told that they arent going to do anything about it, or possibly have to take a day off work so they can send round someone to take fingerprints, nothing further will come of it.
Option b) leave a note saying 'as you have found, i do not leave valuables in my car. Please stop breaking into it'
I went for the option which doesnt cost me money and is most likely to get results.
My point is that it shouldnt be this way, police should be able to do something about this sort of petty crime.
