I probably can't make tonight, I've got way too much work on. On another note for anyone that was there last time listening to me babble the company I work for has been bought by Oracle since then so that might make the next few months / decisions about what I actually want to do easier smile

Apologies for not being able to make it, something came up last minute (and that's not an excuse because I didn't do my 'homework' laugh)

I had a banging headache last night so may have come across as even dopier than normal! You were missed Ross but now have even more time to expand your client base before the next meeting smile

To spice things up a bit I'm going to suggest something I may regret, having a guest celebrity speaker at the next meeting. Someone who's had entrepreneurial success and can give us a 30 minutes or so talk, field some questions..watch this space, now, I wonder if Sir Dick is in the phonebook...

I can feel the prssure already! One PHer came back a couple of weeks ago with some good points about my website and so I am making some minor changes to it now. Once I have that will be it, anything else is changing things for change's sake.

I am also targeting getting the research going ASAP and having it done by the next meeting. Let's see if I make it!

Go Ross! Btw if you link to your website from your profile you get a nice Pagerank 7 link which is a most excellent SEO start..

Could you translate that for us oldies, please? It sounds like it might be useful to me.

Sure, Search Engine Optimisation i.e. getting yer website found on Google. I spend a year learning the ropes as it were. PH is very well ranked so any links from PH to your website have some value.

I've been pondering the stock image suggestions that you chaps made last night and think I may have found a half way house solution to explore.

It's good to talk - I must confess I can be dismissive of ideas sometimes in my eagerness to push on. I must remember that there's no such thing as a bad idea!

Thanks again chaps.

Cheers Ted, www.tedvertiser.com seems to develop at an amazing speed relative to anything I've done, look forward to seeing the next stage.

Btw, I have had plenty of genuinely bad ideas in the past so if anyone is stuck for one just PM me smile

A PHer was kind enough to provide some feeback on my site (currently held on bagshotit.co.uk). One area he mentioned was the section where I compare p/t costs vs. f/t costs. In it is says:

'A highly skilled and experienced Marketing Manager can cost upwards of £50,000p.a. Add to this the additional costs of employer’s national insurance, sick pay, holiday pay, staff benefits, etc. and it is conservatively estimated that total costs are 40% more for a business; £70,000 - a far from inconsiderable sum.'

He said: I don't think that the calculation of a marketing professional's potential salary on the site is really relevant. You need a range of hourly or daily rates and maybe how long you expect it to take to put a marketing plan together for a product. Currently, your charge rates are not definitive and it would worry me and probably others, entering into an open-ended financial commitment.'

I agree to an extent but how best can I pitch this? It isn't meant to be a 'Marketing will take this long to set up and do and then we'll leave' but I don't want to overtly say that it colud last indefinately. I thought about saying that a consultant may charge £1250 a day (I work with one who does!) and a one man band may charge £500 a day. Therefore I'd pitch my people in between because of the other benefits of finding suitable people and having a bank of people with specialised makreting skills where required. Thoughts?

Notes: I'm at the start point so not up an running yet, just doing to research first and keeping costs as low as possible.

There's still some tweaking to be done to the website and I know it is far from the best one but it's a good value option initially. If all goes well I'll upgrade it all

Another PHer suggested it was more of a supply of Interim Management.

PS: I have posted the question on here and not in the business forum to save me all the unrelated questions I'll get from people who don't know about what I am doing.

Ross - maybe you want to consider pricing based on stages of project deliverables?

On another thread someone likened Ross' business to a recruitment agency. if I use that as an example as it is also an area I know then a typical fee structure for a retained search or headhunt assignment might be 1/3 on accepting assignment, 1/3 on delivery of shortlisted candidates, 1/3 on candidate start. One arm of the business I currently work for is installation work and contracts can be set up for staged payments at key milestones. This method doesn't work in another arm of the business which is service and maintenance where customers typically pay for work on completion of work and receipt of invoice. I guess a variation on a theme would be to do the work/project at a fixed price with a payment schedule aligned to deliverables/milestones. I don't know enough about Ross' venture but am merely throwing something out as food for thought.
