Brembo have four different categories of brake disc patterns:

-Drilled
-Type I
-Type III
-Type V

Am I right assuming Type III and Type V are very impractical for the road/only for racing?

A road car should only use Drilled and Type I?

Just seen these (below) on Ebay, which are apparently for BMW (320 323 325 E46).

So they are a cross between Drilled and Type V??

Stay away from drilled cast iron discs. If you get them hot enough to need the extra ventilation then they suffer from greatly accelerated fatigue cracks due to thermal stress around the drillings.

Any of the grooved discs shown in that link would be fine for road use, if used with the appropriate pads.

Do you actually need more ventilation than you have with plain discs? If your brakes don't get them ot enough to need the extra ventilation then they are just causing more noise, wear and brake dust and actually reducing the effectiveness of the brakes, not increasing it.

Buying a newer car, like the look of the Type V brakes, but weren't sure if they are only for racing and would they be sensible on a road car.
