I'm assuming that the plate comes without a car because other wise you could look at the first registered date on the log book.

3 letters 3 numbers started around 1933(give or take a year or two). So you only have 30 odd years to play with.

The ABC 123 format lasted longer in some places than others due to the number of cars registered and the number of location ID letters they had. - eg My car registered in London early 1960 was YXN nnn.

Staffordshire ran out first, in 1953, and started issuing 123 ABC format but some places never ran out (eg Scotland and Wales, hence age related plates like ASU 123 and AFF 123 were/are still available).

The A suffix started in 1963 but some places hadn't run out of old format numbers and didn't change to suffix until 1965 so the plate your asking about could be anywhere from 1932 to 1965.

One can of course make a guess based on the first letter, or it helps if one knows the make and model of car. However someone had produced a book and it has since appeared on the internet. It is a long list and it is better if one downloads and then puts it into Excel, then sort and search.

A better one on here

http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/registrations/reg-l...

Gives the actual months of issue so you can estimate the actual month of your plate from the numbers.
