Kids and verrucas
Discussion
Shouldn't walk barefoot anywhere to be safe, especially if the floor gets sweaty, and may save any embarrassment.
There's 2 main types of treatment.
1) salicylic acid - bazuka is a water proof version. Requires application every day and filing down with an emery board
2) freezing - such as wartner. Works quicker.

It's a viral infection of the cells in the outermost area of the skin. Human papilloma virus and it causes the "bump" in the skin.
OK .. it can disappear of its own accord in time. But as Losi points out we use salicyclic acid which means you have to apply each day and rub with a file . This stuff dissolves the affect skin BUT should not be applied to HEALTHY skin in error
Freezing? - very effective but kids are not happy - it can HURT!
![whistle](/inc/images/whistle.gif)
Some chiropodists will laser it out .. less painful .. but painful on the bank account
![wink](/inc/images/wink.gif)
To keep safe and contained.. make sure the affected person keeps to own towelling and clean bath/shower after they've used it tp protect rest of household
![wink](/inc/images/wink.gif)
Acoid walking barefoot in public pools etc.
Verrucas tend to affect those who sweat a lot .. so wear cotton socks to absorb moisture and bathe regularly.
Make sure shoes and socks are the correct fit and wash and disinfect regularly.
Hope this all helps here ..

Banana skin.
No, please don't laugh - it works! Four-year old had a particularly unpleasant-looking specimen and we didn't really want to use salicylic acid or similar.
Cut a square of banana skin slightly larger than the verruca and apply with sticking plaster tape, with the flesh-side against the offending item.
Leave for 3-4 days (the banana skin will have gone brown, don't worry about this) then remove, clean the area and put a fresh piece of banana skin onto the verruca. At this stage, DON'T be tempted to scrape, rub or otherwise fiddle with it.
Again, leave for 3-4 days. You may need to repeat this a few times (up to a month, depending on the size), but you'll see the verruca itself going white. Again don't scrape or pick at it.
Eventually you'll notice the core of the verruca has separated from the surrounding tissue and will, likely, just come away cleanly with the banana/plaster.
The resultant hole will heal, leaving your daughter verruca-free!

If it's just a little un then leave it be, but keep a good eye on it. 9 times out of ten they will just sit there for a good few months (maybe even years) then just bugger off. If it starts to spread/become larger then you'd be best trying to get rid.
The over the counter stuff is very hit and miss but worth a try in the first instance. If that doesnt work then freezing maybe available via your GP or you might need to see a private chiropodist/podiatrist. There's a load of different treatments and none of them are anywhere near 100% effective, very hit n miss unfortunately.
Personally I would try and treat it with something called marigold therapy then, if unsuccessful, a combination of pyrogallol and salicylic acid, this is a nasty combo though and needs careful application and monitoring.
Bear in mind any callus formed over the verruca absolutely needs to be debrided before applying anything or it just won't work, this can be done with an emery board/pumice or a blade (but be careful with a blade). Also it might be worth treating the area with a urea based emollient for a week or so before the treatment to get the top layers of skin nice and soft.
Couple of things you can do for nowt.
1. Cover the thing with a piece of duck tape, keep it covered for a good few weeks and see what happens.
2. Get some mouldy, black, banana skins and hold them in place with the tape or a pad of some kind (can be bit tricky). The formaldehyde released by the banana skin sometimes does the trick.
3. Tell her to stop whinging and cut her foot off.
Like I said though, very hit and miss, there's no one absolute solution for this particular strain of 'good foot aids' and this is why most NHS podiatry services don't offer verruca treatments, just too time consuming and costly.
Good luck with it anyway.
ps.... just watching Bear Grylss, you could try whipping the soles of her feet with the stalks of an ortayga plant!!![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)

My daughter has picked up her first verruca - ah, happy memories... Anyoo, what's the current treatment for it, is it actually true that she shouldn't walk around in the shower bare foot and does it matter if she walks around bare foot at karate (dry wooden floor)?
Ta.
Cover the kid in Bazooka that Verruca and the verruca will be fine Ta.

I agree with this, although I went about it by just keeping on rubbing banana skin on it, rather than taping it on, and it eventually got better. No, please don't laugh - it works! Yup, the duck tape is the one we currently advise. Takes 8-10 weeks and works as well as anything else. Not quite so good if you have sweaty feet, though. Cheap, painless....1. Cover the thing with a piece of duck tape, keep it covered for a good few weeks and see what happens.

BANANA SKIN!
My son had a large verruca, which i treated as directed with 3 of the leading treatments for a good eight months.
After listening to janie lee-grace on R2, i tried the banana skin, and in two days it had gone !! Mother nature knows best for sure.
Try it - it really works.
Best wishes.
Eddie
I had verrucas as a kid, bazuka didnt work, nor did freezing them(which hurt like feck and caused my toe to swell to twice its size), resorted to going to a private chiropodist who cut them out, then used salicylic acid crystals rubbed on the wound using tweezers to eliminate the remaining verruca tissue. Took a few sessions but did the trick.

It's all down to the immune system of the person. The verruca isn't causing the body any harm, so the immune system is not encouraged to do anything about it.
Something I read recently (though not terribly scientific) relates stress levels to the appearance of verrucae.
Make sure the victim has plenty of the vitimins and minerals known to suuport the immune system, and let nature take it's course.
Unless the thing is actually painful to walk on, it's not worth worrying about, and all you will do is line the pockets of the companies that produce the "remedies".
