I reckon a 2-11 with 300bhp would be a devastating track tool.. with maybe a touch more aero!

What are the tuning potentials of this engine??
I know the gearbox is the weak link, but if one was not concerned with keeping the warranty in tact.. what could be achieved.?

Cheers

yes, but it's not going to be cheap bolt-ons...

I was told (wrongly or rightly) that the internals are good for 300+!?

several people have claimed this, nobody has actually done it in any way a reliable package.

valvetrain, oil pump, pistons, etc are all known weakpoints when they are pushed hard.

Frank (Ronin) in the US has custom built his engine with new liners/pistons/etc etc etc and had just got to 463Whp with a turbo, time will tell if it's reliable...

No,in an Exige, but having seen some of his vids i think thats more than enough....;)

Mind you did'nt he wreck a gearbox and melt a piston before the last rebuild(s)?!

yup,

it's that engines 3rd life as such, if you go and ask him, he is very honest and open about what he has been though.

as with most engines and tuning, with a big pot of cash, you can go a long way, ...what you really should be asking is what power can I have, whilst still being able to go 20K miles between rebuilds without blowing up or being tinkered with each week wink

Most big power Elises run Honda or Audi engines. Some people are running these at 400, 500bhp ...BUT with a lot of tinkering, low rebuild times etc, they use them for just drag racing or other timed events and thats it.

Others who want big power, but use their car daily, want it to last 50K miles and 100 track days etc ...well they stick to the proven 300-350bhp levels, where there are hundreds of cars now out there with like 30,40,50K miles post conversion.

Right now, on the Toyota engine in the the Elise, base level is 190bhp, Lotus will warranty up to 250/60bhp supercharged and aftermarket SC suppliers will give you 270-80bhp warrantied ...thats it for now I think...sure there are nutters like Frank whove got a full built engine and a car thats spent months off the road, being tinkered with ...if thats what you want, then Im sure he will advise the best way to go smile

An easy way of adding top end power is using an on demand alternator (all ancillaries are set up for 1800rpm so at 7800 they are inefficient, especially the pumps). Has anyone done this? also you get better economy.

  • most* current OEM stuff already does this, it's not exactly new.
