TL/DR - is there any way of getting irons adjusted without someoone trying to sell me a set I don't want?
Surely if you go into a decent local pro shop - or even have a quick Google for club makers/fitters local to you - and explain that you won't be buying new clubs but want yours fitted and adjusted as necessary, you should be able to find someone willing to do it?

Had a great day yesterday, but the course is absolutely brutal at this time of year.

Stray off line with any shot and you are severely punished, the rough is unplayable and finding your ball almost impossible.

Absolutely savage and a very tough test of golf - 27 points and 5 blobs for me. Several 3 off the tee moments!

Knock out match on Sunday afternoon, through to the last 16.

Like Bodhi, I'm slightly concerned as my tee shots have been very poor recently. Let's hope I can find some form....

Well, I couldn't find any form. Low point in my golfing season!

Over the years, I've been a pretty solid putter (TBH, it was instrumental in keeping my handicap below 5) but I've been in a bit of a funk of late.

For some reason, I seem to be decelerating the putter head at impact - and not just short putts, all lengths are affected.

Worse case, this means I leave my first putt short and then, having not had the benefit of seeing the line as the ball passed the hole, am not filled with confidence on the second. Result can be a weak and pathetic 3 putts which is proving to be an absolute killer - play great tee to green, louse it up on the short stuff.

I've had an Odyssey 2-ball putter for as long as I can remember and, thinking that a change mightn't be a bad thing, had a good look through all the putters on sale in our pro-shop over the weekend.

Far and away the best instant feeling was a Scotty Cameron Futura X5 - perfect weighting, lovely balance and a club that just felt 'right'. And then I checked the price - £270 ! Blimey, prices have certainly increased over the past few years.

But then I got to thinking - if (and it's a big 'if') a putter could save me just 2 shots per round, then £270 would be nothing short of a bargain.

Not committed to investing just yet and will want to get a couple of rounds in with a demo club, but still can't get away from thinking I'd have to be a little mad to spend that much on just a putter !
Where do you live? If it's not too far out of your way, go and see Matt at the London Putting Academy (Royal Blackheath GC). Money very well spent!

Down on the south coast.

It's weird - had issues with other parts of my game over the years, but putting has been the one constant.

Certainly don't want to start messing about with cack-handed grips or anything like that and I'm not sure a lesson is what I need - half hour with a psychologist, now there's a thought !
I'm on the South Coast as well.

You'd be surprised - it's not so much a lesson, but he's very good. I think £140 on a 2 hour session with him will be better spent than £270 on a new putter.

It was an eye opener for me!

I have Captains Day on Sunday, and it'll be my first game in 3 weeks.

After my embarrassing display in the knock out at the beginning of the month I haven't been back hehe

I can beat that. Shot +3 in the first round of the club champs 2 weekends ago, followed by a +10 round the next day. Went to practice friday week just gone to see what was going on. Shanked a full basket of balls. Got into the car and pulled out of playing sat & sun as I didn't fancy punishing myself all weekend.
Been to the range twice since. Not a single shank. Don't you just love golf!
Glad it's not just me, then!

Think I needed a break. I've got a few comps in the coming weeks then we're away for 3 weeks. When we're back I'll have a lesson and get some serious practice in, but at the moment I just don't have the time.

Hmm, went out for a quick 9 holes last night with a friend, shot a 1 over 36.

Same 9 holes in the Competition on Sunday resulted in me shooting 43.

Hate this game sometimes :/
White tees for the competition versus yellow for the friendly round? I find that even an extra 10 yards per tee makes a difference and tests what shape your game is in e.g. that 7 iron approach shot suddenly becomes a 6 iron approach. My best competition rounds have always been when my chipping and putting has been at it's best because I'm hitting less greens and need to make lots of up and downs.
We only ever play off of the whites, because of this!

Had a nice game yesterday for Captains Day. Came 5th so not too shabby, 32 points albeit with 4 blobs.

Best I've played in a fair few weeks actually so quite happy.

First game of the year for me yesterday (the travails of young children keeping me from my fun) and I ache like billy-o today.

A scrappy 82, with no 3-putts, and not a single putt missed from inside about 7 feet. This is unheard of for me. A 15 footer for an eagle was raced 5 feet past, and the knee-knocker for birdy thankfully sunk.

My normal short putting performance would have lead to the 87-88 that the rest of my game deserved. I drove well, but the mid and short irons, normally the best part of my game, were woefully out of calibration.
We seem to have the opposite problems! Short game and short irons pretty good. Driving and tee shots letting me down. I shot 88 which included 4 triple bogeys. Poor.

Just been into American Golf to order another wedge (gone for the 50 degree Engage Square to replace my PW) and we got onto the discussion of club lofts (as you do), and he mentioned something I frankly couldn't believe. He was quite shocked that the 50 was to replace my PW, as apparently, on a modern set, the PW is closer to 43 degrees, opposed to the 49 of my current one.

43 degrees??? On a bloody Pitching Wedge?

No wonder the pros are hitting 5 irons around 220 yards, it's because their 5 iron is what I would term a 3 iron......
My Ping i25 PW is 46 degrees:

I also carry 50, 55 and 60 degree wedges.

I played there back in April. It was wet as you like! Can imagine it being nice in the summer.

Lovely looking day at Troon!

Willett nearly drove the green on the 1st - and then proceeded to 3 putt. That's my kind of golf hehe

Well done Stenson, amazing 63 to win it.

We had an all day session at the club yesterday - foursome Absent Friends competition in the morning followed by a BBQ and then the annual Short Game Challenge competition.

We came 4th in the foursomes but unfortunately I bowed out of the SGC in the 2nd round.

I organised the BBQ and the SGC and it all went really well with everyone enjoying themselves. Hard work - down the club at 5.30am and home at 8pm - shattered!

Got back out on the course last night for the first time in 4 weeks - what a fantastic evening!

Played some good shots so came away relatively pleased with myself! Course is in superb condition.
