I used to see Bales all the time when i was rallying, they are still used for single venue events plus artificial chicanes on forest rally stages. I spend most of my time on International circuits now so only usually get to see the masses of runoff and armco. Bales take more management but for a single weekend event are more than upto the job, they give a much higher barrier than armco ever would, the only thing that would improve debris retention would be full height catch fencing.

The extent of the debris is more a function of the materials the car is constructed from than the composition of the object impacted with, composites absorb the energy of an impact in a very diferent way to traditional materials. You can see this most other weekend in an F1 race, even when impacting at a glance on armco.

It's motorsport for drivers who want to show who is fastest. Every run is timed, although maybe not officially. Some drivers may not have the ability to do the perfect run, and maybe a few have nothing to prove, so don't drive at ten tenths.

Who remembers seeing a young Nick Heidfield blow the hill away in 1999? That was probably as perfect a run as will ever be achieved. Of course he was young and hungry and desperate to prove himself, but hey the nearest guy was about 4.5 seconds behind him. That's around 10%, equivalent to about 40 seconds quicker than the next guy round the ring!

Can't understand why he ain't won the championship yet, but I guess he must have peaked in July 99.

Hi a friend of mine found this link whilst searching for details of the accident you see I am the guy who was hit in the face with an A3 size section of aston martin wing . I am OK with the photos been here but just for information I spent the weeked in hospitai at chicester . I have had eye surgery and facial reconstruction as a result of the accident and I still have more operations to come .In the end I will have reasonable sight in my left eye some paralysis of the face and a huge scar . So motorsport is dangerous and if you see an accident duck someone will always record it and you can watch the replays at home and not from a hospital bed .Stuart ginger

Stuart,

Really good to hear from you on here - there's always 'Monday morning quarterbacking' on these things, but your perspective is very welcome. And sorry to hear about the extent of your injuries...

You've probably read all the well-wishes already, but please feel welcome to hang around...it's generally a friendly place.

All the best,

Martin.
