PH does Rad Am Ring 2016 - 24 hour race at the Nurburgring
Discussion
You might be able to help us on a Touristfahrten question too, a couple of us are considering staying an extra night and getting some laps in, would you happen to know if there's likely to be any daytime session on the Monday?
Having looked at the 2015 calendar it suggests only an evening session.

A question (or 2) if I may. For those "brave" people who ride solo:
1) How long do you ride at a time?
2) How long do you rest for between each session?
3) What do you eat during the event?
Not that I am thinking of doing the Rad Am event solo, just out of interest.

I'm not riding solo but we were pitting close to the solo guys at revolve24 last year and I think questions like that are hard to answer as they are very personal to you and what your training has consisted of. There was an ex 24 hour MTB solo XC World champion there who was brutal. honestly he was just like a metronome going on through the night but was clearly hugely experienced at non stop riding for ungodly periods of time.
At Revolve the experienced 24 hour solo racers were out there for anything up to three hours before coming in, refuelling and going out again. Some had a short break before going out (5 mins) others a little longer (15). They had hot food waiting for them and bottles exchanged so could just sit done and rest without worrying about fettling teh bike. Some took a long break in the middle of the night to get an hour or two sleep, others just ploughed on through at the same rate as daylight hours....
You should be well into Z1-2 territory for most of the race so at that pace your body should be able to digest most things and you will know what your body will need when. Having a good pit crew preparing things for you is essential so you can come straight in and eat rather than cook it yourself, and planning it all the week before, is also essential (but that should come from the training and preparation)
I'd say you could do it with minimal specific training, its a psychological effort as much as it is physical, neither Brands nor the ring are flat and it will sap energy but I think most people could complete a solo 24 hour circuit race if you did everything on feel albeit without being at the sharp end of the results. Thekey will be pacing and preparation. If you can afford to rest like a monk for the three days preceeding for example, you will be in very good shape.
Anyone doing a solo could also consider taking a spare bike. In the event of a mechanical you'd have a hot spare.
Or, you could even swap between them anyway, giving your pit crew time to lube drivetrain, adjust brakes, check tyres, charge batteries, fill bidons, tape a banana to the frame and put an 'inspirational' message to your stem, all while you do a lap on the spare.

We have had interest expressed but no more definites. I can't really understand why not. It's cycling, it's the Nurburgring, it's a road trip, it's a lads' weekend. Would have thought it'd be up more peoples' streets.
How do you want to play it? Think it's time to close the list and register a two man team to be sure of getting you in?

I could be interested, as just signing up to rides/sportives and this looks good
Could someone confirm the current state of play regarding rough costs & logistics, as I got lost in the pages so far!
Two spaces left on a third team IIRC, there are one or two more people who have expressed an interest but not confirmed yet. Its going to be a whole lot of fun, we have two trackside pitches next two each other for eating, drinking, sleeping and general banter. A road trip has been arranged so most of the convoy are on the same eurotunnel service and there will be beer...Could someone confirm the current state of play regarding rough costs & logistics, as I got lost in the pages so far!

Hi TMM!Could someone confirm the current state of play regarding rough costs & logistics, as I got lost in the pages so far!
We have two teams of four registered (plus one solo rider), and two riders waiting to make up the next team.
Entry Cost is EUR440 per 4, so whatever that works out in Sterling at after bank costs. About £80, give or take.
There's a suggested Eurotunnel team crossing on the Friday, and most people are car sharing where practical. We're matching people up based on locations, with the suggestion that occupants split the tunnel and fuel costs between themselves. But travel anyway you want if that doesn't suit. People are heading back at different times. Some car loads straight back after the race, some stopping an extra night.
We have a double plot trackside on which to set up our camp and pit area. CoolC has appropriated a giant awning from work for and we'll all bring tents and sleeping gear. Food is available onsite but Mr hero CoolC has a local colleague who said he'd come feed us. Bring some pasta or whatever as well to be sure, if you like.
Other than that we turn up, pitch up, have a beer the Friday night. Then race 1 on 3 off for a day and a night, whilst having a gas.
Hopefully you'll get a pass signed TMM.
SPB. Can you see what parcels are still available? We currently have two adjacent, but would a third team be able to get a parcel near by? That way we could have a "base camp" plus a remote parcel for either car storage or a quieter pitch for better sleep for those who want it (depending on the neighbours to that parcel of course)
ETA: For those interested, we currently have two plots in the Mercedes Arena as circled below.

About a dozen plots left, all in zone H (in the track centre, just the other side of Tribune T2 from us). Maybe not the greatest for sleeping, but we could always use it as on overflow car park if soSixPotBelly said:

I find I need the motivation of a planned event hanging over my head to get on with serious training. How do you want to play it? Think it's time to close the list and register a two man team to be sure of getting you in?
Currently it's still a bit too unsure to get my butt into gear.

If you "um & err", you'll never do it. I was the same for TDPH last year, then said sod it and booked the hotel. As soon as money has been spent, you'll find the motivation you need.Currently it's still a bit too unsure to get my butt into gear.
For those feeling that you're not fast enough, or it's something you're not capable of, my first century ride ever was day one of TDPH. With the support of the TDPH chaps including a few of the guys doing this event, i did 3 century rides in 3 days and had a great time doing it. If i can do it, anyone can.
