SPD related incidents - Funny!

On a club run a few years back: we were all gearing up for a sprint. I had just got the gear wound up when my foot came out of the pedal, i lurched forward and hit the handle bars with my leg, the handlebars turned viloently, I hit the ditch, fell onto the road and had 3 of my mates fall on top of me.
Was very surprised that no one was hurt badly. Just lost a bit of skin.

Excellent so I'm not the only one - I ride with Specialized BG Tahoe shoes which were expensive but I think it is important to make sure they fit really well! Plus they look like normal trainers so you don't look like a plank!
Ive got a pair of Shimano PD-M520 Pedals which I got from wiggle for about £35 - I love wiggle!
If you wear those on a road bike you'll definitely look a complete plank!! Ive got a pair of Shimano PD-M520 Pedals which I got from wiggle for about £35 - I love wiggle!

A mate of mine managed to forget he was clipped in after the long wooden section at Llandegla. He fell to his right and straight into a drainage channell full of water. It was about 3 or 4 foot deep so he was fully submerged, and has to complete the rest of the ride soaked. He absolutely stank on the way home in the car....
I've never ridden with spuds. This is why: A few years back I went out for a ride with a couple of guys from work. Our nice twisty bit of singletrack came to a style just before a mainroad and we were about to get off. Instead, one of them, newly equipped with spds, came to a halt in front of the gate, failed to unclip and slowly, inexorably toppled into the biggest patch of nettles you've ever seen.

the most amusing incidents are the ones that happen at really slow speeds.
Definitely! It was our first experience of mountain biking and it was a friend of my dad's who was our guide for the day. It was all going well, bit tired but loving every minute. That was until we reached a bridge that was nothing more than a plank of wood to cross a stream. So the quick lesson starts on the best line to take as you approach the bridge, all very straightforward and our very experienced mentor decides to go first to show us how to do it. I don't know what he did but I can vividly remember the sight of him upside-down in the stream still clipped in, swearing at getting very wet!I've had two incidents. One was with clips and straps. Was bombing down a main road in Edinburgh when a bus pulls out in front of me and brakes. I pull on the stoppers and hit a pothole at the same time. Next moment I am flying through the air with the bike attached to me. I end up in a heap in the gutter next to a bus stop and an old wifie offers me a Polo mint! Ended up in A&E with a broken wrist and gear shaped bruises on my back that lasted for a month. Next one was a few years later. Just got a new Kona with SPDs and was getting on fine. Stopped outside Mont Orgueil castle in Jersey (was living there at the time)and forgot I was attached. Next thing I was slowly falling to the ground attached to the bike! Another trip to A&E, hairline fracture of the arm!
The only instance I've had (that I can remember) was when riding from London to Paris we were going through a lovely French village and one of the support vehicles was behind me.
We were swapping bidons, having a chat and taking photos and videos of each other.
We approached some lights and there were some concrete bollards next to the road so I decided to just rest my hand on the bollards for support.
You guessed it my hand missed the bollard and I ended up lying in the road across the pavement between 2 bollards..... all captured on film!

First time back in the saddle after 10 years more concerned with cars and beer, joined some lads from a local bike shop.
A chap on an Epic Brain commented that I was doing bloody well on the DH sections considering I was on a fully rigid clunker.
Bouyed by this, I decided to find my feet with my wheelies again. Immediately looped it and landed flat on my back, winding myself, still clipped in, still holding the bars with an inverted old Alpine Stars Cro-Mega LX above me. Twice.

Pushed the bike up to the top of the Devil's staircase on the West Highland Way, 8am, misty, no-one about.
Started to descend toward Kilnlochleven, I was very conscious that if I fell it could be a while before anyone came along.
I Kept my feet out of the SPD's , in case I needed to put my feet down quickly I got to a very tricky bit, wet, sharp granite, and as I carefully tried to balance through it I felt the shoes click in, one after the other, which meant when I tried to 'dab' my foot for balance I couldn't, and fell with the bike on top of me.
In a puddle..........
With sharp rocks in it.....
SPD's are great, mostly.......

First SPD's fitted and set up at my mates bike shop. First ride down the street and back to the shop, with my mate watching waiting for me to fall off-unclipped fine.
Into the shop, settled up, chatted for a while then left. Cycled along to where I'd parked my car, came to a halt and realised I couldn't unclip. Cue a graceful(honest) keel over onto the pavemant in front of two bemused old ladies doing their shopping.
Fell off at Kirroughtree a few weeks ago-hit a rock and went over the bars. Wasn't too bad apart from me staying clipped in on my right leg and straining it as I went over. Still wouldn't be without them tho....

A good few years ago...
I had just put cleats on a new pair of road shoes before a race.
The left cleat wasn't fully tight and came loose during the race, so when I tried to unclip it after the finish line my foot rotated but stayed attached to the pedal.
I came to a stop and then just fell over - in front of about 200 bikers/spectators. Was very embarrased and sore.
The blood from my knee permanently discoloured my new shoes. Sickened!
