Left my bike at work last night as it was someones leaving do, left around 7pm and the trains were rammed, so glad I commute by bike.
Felt like I made the right choice in the morning when I put on the weather forecast and saw this

Doing my first commute by bike to work tomorrow.

No idea how long it will take me. It's only two and a bit miles, and all downhill on the way. But leaving at 5:30am. Giving myself 30 minutes to get there and then showered and dressed for 6:15ish (don't start until 7am, but bit of paperwork and allows me to make sure if have enough time).

If it's icy though I think I'll pass!

Four PR's on Strava on the way in this morning, and 1 on the way home tonight. Really enjoyed the ride, even if it was a bit on the chilly side.

Didn't think of a balaclava. Might see if I can find the one I use on my motorbike!

I don't have any trousers at the moment...I've got a base layer and coat, along with a jersey I got for Xmas, so top will be warm.

Hoping that as I tend to overheat anyway I'll be ok. If not it's only down the road before I can get a nice (hopefully!) hot shower.

To save making a new thread, can anyone recommend any trousers or something to keep my legs warm? I saw some leg warmers at halfords, but they looked tiny!

Trousers?

If you have padded shorts already, wear them with some Ron Hill Trackster pants over the top to keep your legs warm...

...only £12.49 in that link, but shop around as lots of places are having sales at the moment, and you may be able to find them cheaper. Available in black with white trim, or blue with red trim, and quite 'aero' efficient but not quite 'Lycra tight'. Or any similar trousers/tights from your local running shop.

The big bonus of the Tracksters is that if you are riding hard, and start to get too warm, you can stop and whip them off and stuff them into a jersey pocket, yet because you have cycling shorts on underneath, you retain (as much of) your dignity (as Lycra will allow) wink

Fairly big commuting week for me, total 235km, ice on Monday but just cold & dry the rest of the time.

The constant avoidance of cars/trucks/pedestrians trying to either kill me or commit Hara-kiri is getting a bit tiresome, though.

First day done and dusted. Left at 0530, took me 13:xx minutes to do the 2.5 miles, but was more to see how long it would take me to get showered and ready. Was in the office by 0610. Back home I wasn't looking forward to, had three hours sleep and had been up for 12 hours by this time. But it wasn't too bad. Around 16 minutes, 2.6 miles and uphill for most of it.

Enjoyed it overall though. Couldn't work out how to get the shower to have hot water though!

Not sure when I'm going to cycle back in. I'm in tomorrow after my main job, but need to get from work 1, home and to work 2 within a hour. Don't really want to rush, plus I'm not too sure what time I'll be finishing.

If not possibly Thursday or Saturday.

Top effort and as far as I can see you are now the only other weekend cycle commuter in the village!
Lovely trip in this morning, above zero so no balaclava and nice and sunny.

Finish at 16.00 on Saturday so first trip home in daylight for what feels like several months too.

Very cold and very wet this morning. At one point I was fighting the wind - on a single speed - wondering if it might be better to get off and walk!

Back in the car this morning, forecast was -1 with windchill and wet. Instead it's damp at worst and fairly mild.

Wish I'd ridden.

Getting back into it and I'm definitely finding it tiring having not ridden consistently into work for a while (still weekly club runs etc but I'm at a fraction of my summer mileage).

Same here, bloody windy!!!!

Left early so didn't have to fight it too much and missed the worst of the rain, which has just started

Blimey though quite a headwind at times

Found a new black ice spot on the cycle path this morning the hard way, now sitting looking at the snow coming down and regretting my adherence to rule #9.

30mph headwinds on the way to work this morning- one of the hardest 11 mile rides I've had in ages. "It's ok" I thought, "nice tailwind on the way home this evening!"

How wrong I was. Flat calm, hardly any breeze at all. And now it's windy again!

Since getting roped in by the rest of you about how great biking to work is, I took mine out on a dummy run to see how long it took me to get to work and back (around 15ish miles), bear in mind I had been exercising on a stationary bike for the past couple of months, absolute fail, I was knackered by the time I got barely a mile down the road from mine. Nobody thought to mention the difference of stationary to actual biking....
That said, been riding around the block a few weeks and I think I am ready for another go but then the weather decided to chuck down hail and snow so still not actually done a commute frown
