Do you definitely want to sell rather than keep an asset in the UK? Given the rate house prices can increase do you risk not being able to buy your way back in?

I'm renting out my UK house while working abroad rather than selling. I'll probably transfer anything that needs a UK address to my parents or sisters addresses when I finally clear out of the house.
I'm not in a position to keep it, as it's the marital home from my former relationship. Current plan is to hold onto my bit of money that comes from it and buy again after the predicted Brexit price crash. Whether that materialises or not, we shall see. The other thing though is; if I own a property in the UK do I rent it out? If I do, I can hardly expect people to clear off every ten weeks so that I can come back to it laugh

Yeah I'm not massively worried about safety really. There's a concern, obviously, but it's not like I'm in the trenches laugh

I wouldn't mind taking my Xbox with me tbh laugh Might be a bit extreme though... Thales will provide me a phone out there so I'll use that for any calls home and they can pay. I'll use my own for my social media and WhatsApp etc. if needed. And of course, PH and keeping this thread updated smile

I'm more upset that I'm going to miss most of the hillclimb season this time. My worry is I get into the lifestyle of working away and never come back and do it properly! I'll cross that bridge as and when I come to it though.

I see you are in Leeds - were you doing Harewood?
Yes on and off lol. Losing my 2017 car in the marriage breakup and starting over with a POS Impreza WRX made it difficult this year but I was looking forward to next season all the same. All being well, my months back home will coincide with a number of events and I will still get to play a small part.

I have spent many months and many tours in places like that and I find it quite therapeutic to be honest.

There is something quite liberating about people not being able to hassle you to do stuff as you are thousands of miles away. It really can be the ultimate 'me' time, rediscover the joy of books, get yourself into the best physical shape of your life. Sleep like a baby.

And when you do come back you find yourself invigorated and with a real appetite for life again.

Good luck.
Cheers, I am thinking along those lines myself. Hopefully I'll do something I've meant to do for years and learn German properly as well. I'll certainly have time on my hands!

Sorry guys I didn't realise I hadn't confirmed that I was going.

I go on the 8th of Jan as it stands, subject to the Visa and stuff being sorted. Accepted an offer on the house although the "buyer" hasn't sold theirs yet but that's now in progress and I'm actually looking forward to it. Once I get out there I'm going to spend the time knuckling down while pouring my wages into paying stuff off back home and making sure I'm in a great position if and when I do return.

Well given that I work in the same field as the OP if he did decide not to go in the end I wish he'd have popped back to this thread and told us... I'd have been there like a rat up a drainpipe lol
They've just told me that they need another tech and if I recommend someone I get a €1000 bonus if they get the job so give me a PM if you serious fancy it.

Hi all! Sorry for the lack of updates, I've not had much chance to get online between settling in and leaving my laptop charger at home laugh

So yeah, I made it. It's not actually too bad at all. The facilities are very good, the gym is decent, the meals are free and the food is pretty much like 3 star all inclusive type fare. One more US style food hall and one more Mediterranean style. In addition there's a Burger King and a Pizza Hut on base plus some other small restaurants and cafes.

Unfortunately I am moving elsewhere next week and have to start over again but it is what it is. Very interesting, very weird seeing people carrying weapons around, and lots of different nationalities here.

Entering via Kabul airport was... "interesting". The arrivals hall being basically a hut. The old airport terminal is now disused as it's at the side of a main road and was subject to attacks.

Next week I take my first helicopter flight when I move to the other location, which I believe is mainly British occupied.

Apologies to people who emailed me that I haven't yet responded to. I will do this week. thumbup

Rode in a Chinook this morning. First time. A lot smaller than I'd imagined and a bit strange but very cool! Noisy as hell!

Nothing really to update at the moment. I'm still at the 2nd base. Food is decent and there seems to be a band of base cats here laugh

The landscape is deffo stunning. I can see snow covered mountains in the distance which look really pretty. Weather has been cold but not unbearable. Bit of snow, etc. Started to get back into the gym this past week as well.

My Romanian roommate has his alarm go off about an hour before I want to get up and it's ruining me. He's a very solid sleeper so his alarm sounds like a siren and like we are under attack. Honestly the first time I heard it, I absolutely st my pants! laugh

I am indeed. On night shifts this week. Working a 12 hour shift tonight then next night off until Sunday.

I have discovered that we have a whole load of cats around the base which is great as I am bloody missing mine!

I never saw that 2nd to last reply!

I didn't end up staying massively long, but I enjoyed the experience overall. I'm definitely an advocate for getting out of your comfort zone and seeing somewhere interesting as a result smile

That's a whole other story that involves someone new who turned out to be the worst thing that ever happened to me...
