Been looking to recruit trainee technical staff for ages without finding even remotely capable UK young 'uns

Gave an opportunity to a highly qualified 22yo Ukrainian graduate to work as an intern for a week (all expenses paid), and was impressed enough with the work ethic, basic skills and overall attitude to hire him permanently. He couldn't more grateful for the opportunity too.

Every cloud etc...

Did he salute you when you employed him full time?

If he's wise enough to get the f*ck out of Ukraine, then I suspect he's worth employing.

Well done you. These people deserve a chance and their work ethic is fantastic.

We have a Ukrainian family living with us (33yo mum plus 2 kids). She had a job at the local golf course within weeks (agriculture background) doing general tidying up of the gardens.

Within a month of starting, the boss is so impressed with her that's he's promoted her onto the course maintenance team. Once her english improves, he's promised her further progression if she wants it. biggrin

Next up. Get her some wheels. smile

I suspect Ukrainian hitmen have their Calendly bookings full for the next few months, sadly.

Someone needs to change the thumbs down icon linked to this thread.

Are all the mods by the pool in their speedos again?

I think that happens when the original poster starts the thread and chooses the icon. Here's a thumbs up to make up for it.

Can I ask OP, you say you're hiring this fella permanently how does this work with visa's etc out of interest.

Why the thumbs down icon?
It's a positive story.

So you couldn't find a UK youngster to work for you as an intern for free.

Right ho.

Ask the OP, I suspect it's just finger trouble on a mobile device when starting the thread.

Doesn't that sum up most Eastern Europeans?

Although many have returned home, they're still our 1st port of call when advertising vacancies. WFH has been a blessing in some ways as we can hire people with better work ethics, same skills at a lower cost albeit working remotely for us.

We've a few Ukrainian staff onsite and they're great workers.

OP has said expenses paid and a formal job offer was made after the week so not sure I see the issue? It’s what every large corporate does for soon-to-be-grads.

Unless I’m misreading your comment?

The issue is that unpaid internships deter graduates from poorer backgrounds from getting roles in businesses, and in some cases (not this one) the firms continue the "unpaid" element of the relationship for months.
It's the modern version of "jobs for the boys"

I understand and agree completely where expenses are not fully reimbursed and/or the internship remains unpaid for an extended period however that is not what the OP has done here.

The bigger issue with internships, in my opinion, is that they’re largely not offered to poorer kids to begin with.

A close family member completed a summer internship with a big bank, after which he got a job offer. I think almost without exception, he was the only person on the scheme who wasn’t from a posh school and from a family who had lots of wonga.

The OP read like he only ever offered it as an unpaid internship and when the chap turned out to be useful he offered him a job after a week.

I'm shocked he didn't have a queue of UK youngsters beating his door down looking to work for free for an unspecified period.

Shocked I tell you.

And the UK candidates weren't even "remotely capable", which suggests he wanted someone with significant qualifications to work for free...
