Hopefully the wisdom of PH can help,
I work part time in a shop and reciently the owners have had some architects in measuring up, it seems the place is to have an extensive re-fit and expansion. Obviously the place will be closed while this is going on so I’m interested to know where the staff stands when it comes to pay. We are all paid weekly at an hourly rate, mainly part time workers, with 1 full time employee (35+hrs a week).

Can the company legally not pay us for the time of the closure or force us to take some in part as holiday or do they have to find us work or pay us our standard rate?.

No one has signed an official contract but the majority of staff have been working similar hours for 6+ years with little change, so I’d guess redundancy/re-employment isn’t an option.
