Do i have to accrue paid holiday?

Have been told, retrospectively, having received a pay check for the grand sum of £20 (as opposed to something around £600 i was expecting!) that i have to accrue paid leave.
This was not mentioned to me before i left or on booking/double checking the holiday.
I have been told that it is 'policy' that you have to earn the first three months worth of leave before it can be paid.
I have been working for the company for over a year, the just closing tax year was completed totally within that company.
Do i have to work the time to accrue paid leave? or do employers have to offer it in advance?

Until 2001, employees needed to have been employed for a minimum of 13 weeks before they had any right to take annual leave. This is no longer the case.
During the first year of employment, employees have a right to take (and be paid for) one twelfth of their annual holiday entitlement in respect of each month they have been employed, rounded up to the nearest half day. Holiday accrues on the first day of each month, in advance.
This system operates only during the first 12 months’ of workers’ employment. Thereafter, for example, if an employee took an agreed two weeks’ leave in the first month of the leave year, the employer would be obliged to pay holiday pay for the whole two weeks.
