Make your own turbo kit?

Now firstly, I am not very technically minded and struggle to change a bulb let alone anything else. However, I do know quite a few techie types who can fit engines etc. Has anyone made up their own turbo kit for their MX5? I imagine there are hundreds of used turbo diesel turbo's kicking around, would these be suitable and what other bits would you need? Is this not really a feasible idea, and if not, why?

To be honest my car is such a shed it would be money down the drain throwing £1500+ at it, I've got mates who have scrapyards and people I know who used to be quite handy at building engines and stuff. Just wondered if it was worth trying to track down a few bits and pieces and seeing if my engine building wizard can get me a bit of FI power!
