I doubt there is much of a correlation between high BMI and a bunch of people who have a McDonald’s every few weeks or months as part of a balanced diet.

Even if you smash a 2500 calorie ‘Big Tasty with Bacon’ meal once a month won’t make any difference. A drop in the ocean.

I know plenty of fit and healthy people who play sport, run, cycle, go to the gym, and still regularly enjoy a meal in a restaurant, a McDonald’s, or a Chinese takeaway.

You seem to be suggesting that anyone who eats in McDonald’s must be fat, which is clearly not going to be true.

I can only assume by your post, you never eat in restaurants, never eat takeaways, or never drink much alcohol, as all those things will be at least as ‘fattening’ as a McDonald’s.

You can enjoy junk food, restaurants, and alcohol in moderation and still be perfectly heathy and not overweight, you simply moderate the rest of your diet.

Since you asked about BMI, I’m a 32” waist and a couple of years ago I lost 2 Kg to get my BMI into the ‘healthy’ zone, at 24.8, so I’m pretty happy.

5'10, 70kg here.

No dramas having the odd double sausage and egg mcmuffin (or, pre covid, breakfast wrap) meal with a single saus'n'egg as a chaser.

Or a large Big Tasty meal with those side cheesy dippers they do.

Nom.

Oh, I do like 'proper' food as well... wink

Well, that slimmed the thread down a bit! - looks like it got rid of some of the excess fat and gristle....

I'm just not seeing the difference between eating in a restaurant once per week, as you say you do, or eating a McDonalds once per week?

Eat an 1800 calorie meal in a nice restaurant.
Eat an 1800 calorie meal in McDonalds.
Eat an 1800 calorie Chinese takeaway.

What's the difference?

You seem to be inferring that eating in restaurants is somehow better or healthier, and I see no evidence for that at all. There have certainly been many occasions where I have consumed more calories and more fat during a 2 or 3 course restaurant meal, than I have eaten in during a meal at McDonalds.

All I'm saying is that I don't judge any types food. They will all make you fat if you eat too much of them.

People can enjoy takeaways, burgers and restaurants in moderation along with a balanced diet and a reasonable amount of exercise and suffer no ill effects.

I saw one of those food investigation programs and they checked the calories in various fast foods outlets, it was the big high street chains that were the healthiest. The independent Indian restaurants and the like had higher calories.

Thanks to my BMI I have been allowed to work from home since last March. I'm topping up my BMI each day by eating dripping sandwiches to keep it that way. And a few McDonalds for good measure.

rofl

Reminds me of the classic Simpsons episode where Homer deliberately eats enough to get his weight over 300lbs, and can then be classed as disabled and work from home.

Not a fan of McD's burgers.

Here in Murica, there's way better & tastier choices.

5 Guys, Whataburger, Sonic.
I discovered Whataburger on my last trip to the US after a recommendation from a mate, but in my defense although I have lost count the amount of trips I have made to the States, it was only the 2nd time I had visited Texas or the surrounding States. One bite of the Hatch Green Chile Bacon Burger I ordered and I was sold, it was bloody lovely!

As for McD's, I had a birthday at my local one when I was primary school (a long time ago!), but it was a really big thing back then. They give us a section of the restaurant, we ran around like lunatics around after the burgers and fries sugar hit. Stupidly they finished it giving a bunch of already hypo kids ice-cream cake, with plastic spoons, which were a perfect catapult for launching the desert, which quickly escalated into a full on food flight with parents and innocent parties having to duck for cover, but unfortunately there was some collateral damage! I sure my parents were horrified, but it was one of the few childhood birthdays I remembered.

As an adult, I snubbed McD's for years, but after seeing what they offered when travelling around the world, I changed my mind. I have had some local menu options that I would be happy to be served in my local pub with a pint, a burger I had in South Korea being one of those stand out ones. Sometimes you get sick of the local cuisine, that you crave a burger fix to give you a break from it.

But you have to be aware in some countries pork/bacon/ham might be substituted because of religion or supply reasons, rendering items tasting wrong, or rank. Two countries I didn't expect that was Singapore (people following Islam as a religion only makes up 14% of the population), so probably due to them being supplied from Malaysia.

And South Africa, which makes no sense:
https://www.mcdonalds.co.za/menu/mega-mcmuffin
A McMuffin with Cicken Ham, Chicken Sausage patties? In the land of Saffa red meat Braai'ing carnivores. fk off.
But SA has Steers, so you can avoid McD's for a better local fast food burger.

The source of the calories matters a little.. the quality of the food is clearly lower, with higher salt and sugar content and more processing in fast food places.. but I get your point.

The main issue isn't the source, it's the habits that go with it and the income association. For your 1 expensive 1800 calorie dinner, you could get probably 8 Mcdonalds 1800 calorie meals.

'Fat' is not the real demographic, it's socio-economic. But in general, the lower the socio-economic class, the higher the obesity rates....

That isn’t actually true for McDonalds, there’s plenty of information out there that they actually pay a premium for some of their ingredients for better quality. Their supply chain is efficient and they buy in such vast quantities that it makes it very cost efficient.

The idea that they just Chuck in the cheapest st possible is a fallacy normally perpetuated by people who like to have a good old sneer at the lower class wink

Plenty of stories out there of people who have lost weight just eating McDonald’s all day for a few months.

Calories in vs calories out...

McDonald’s meals are usually less calories than eating out at “nice” restaurants, as McDonald’s meals are tiny in comparison!
