Building some speakers - Anyone done it?

Years ago I heard some Magnepan MMGs and subsequently have been committed to `open baffle' designs. Lots of people with better prose than me, but they sound `life like'. They can be very easy and cheap to build with money being spent on drivers rather than furniture finish. IMO OB speakers using ribbon tweeters are special.
<snip>
I note you put open baffle in quotes - I presume this is because you know the MMGs are not conventional open baffle speakers - i.e. they don't use moving coil drivers, they are vaguely similar to electrostatics as far as I know (they are ribbon based).<snip>
So I don't think it's possible to draw a direct comparison with moving coil driver based OB speakers.
Noted but I think the major part of their "uniqueness" is due to the Open Baffle configuration. Magnepans have a lot of driver area with low mass but with little excursion. But essentially they are similar to conventional drivers beyond the difference in inertia/area/excursion. Furthermore, I also have a set of GR Research dual OB subwoofers and an OB MTM which are cones drivers with ribbon tweeter. This system also shares the major qualities of the Magnepans.
