Question about smart tvs and inbuilt apps and 5.1
Discussion
Hi all
Ive had a 5.1 set up for a while with a yamaha amp and 5 speakers plus sub. Ultra HD blu ray and PS4 connected up via the yamaha amp.
Ive recently bought a LG55CX and this has built in Prime and Netflix where before I watched via the blu ray machine apps.
when watching prime or netflix on the telly now I dont get a 5.1 signal only stereo.
anyone know if its possible to get 5.1 and if so what I need to do to sort it?
I do know the amp I have doesnt support 4k pass thru but not sure this should affect it?
I have an optical feed from the tv to AV4 on my amp but as I say it doesnt seem to detect a 5.1 signal.
Many thanks

Assuming both devices have this feature, you can get TV [surround] sound to the amp via ARC (Audio Return Channel).
It requires an HDMI connection from the socket labelled 'ARC' on the back of the TV to the receiver.
You would also need to check that ARC is enabled on both devices.
Thanks for that. I do have the HDMI lead from the HDMI2 (ARC) on the tv (LG 55CX) going to the receiver so that should be ok.It requires an HDMI connection from the socket labelled 'ARC' on the back of the TV to the receiver.

I may well need to switch on ARC on both devices though, hadnt thought of that, assumed it would be "auto" I guess. Will try and check.
ARC is part of your solution, or Optical.
From an audio point of view in respect to the sound signals they'll carry they both do the same job. Where they differ is that ARC adds a layer of control via the HDMI feature called CEC. This is what allows the TV to switch on the amp and for the TV remote (or any remote that controls the TV volume) to control the amp's volume.
What you will still need to do though is use the TV menus to set the type of signal that either ARC or Optical output. You may well find that there are separate menus for each connection type, so check you're making any changes to the correct menu for the type of 'wire' that's being used.
The default setting may well be Stereo PCM. To access the multichannel version of the sound signal you may have to set the menu option to Dolby / Digital / Bitstream. These are various names for the same thing.
At this point, the TV will be capable of sending Dolby Digital 5.1 to the amp, but there might be another step within each of the streaming apps set-up menus to also enable 5.1 audio.
If you wish to check your progress before diving in to the streaming app menus, (and presuming you have either a TV aerial connected for Freeview or a Satellite connection for Freesat). then switch over to the appropriate tuner and select on of the HD channels. The main programme content should be in DD5.1, and so your Yamaha amp should display Dolby D.
[Note: there is an outside chance that some adverts and news programmes might be transmitted in Stereo with Dolby Surround encoding even on HD channels. The audio formats being used depend on the programme content first, then the various hardware menu settings after that. Depending on your amp settings, it will flag up as ProLogic II Movie / Music / Game]
