Harrison Ford was responsible for the line “I love you” … “I know.”
At least Ford acknowledges that this was a great line. He and director Irvin Kershner fought Lucas for it. “Film is a collaborative process. I’m happy that I was able to make a small contribution. It didn’t go down so well with George at the time. He would have been a lot happier with the scripted line, which is ‘I love you, too,’ but I felt, and Kersh agreed, that there was the opportunity for a more character ’smelling’ moment. So we shot that among other versions. We did shoot ‘I love you, too,’ but when Kersh presented his cut, he used the line ‘I know.’ George said, ‘That’s gonna get a laugh. That’s not good.’ Kersh and I both said, ‘It could be a good laugh at that moment.’

“I love you.” “…I know,” = good laugh.
“Oh, Ani, how you’ve grown!” = bad laugh.
biggrin
Which just demonstrates how George knows nothing about character development. Harrison Ford understood Han Solo, like all good actors understand their character. Han would never say anything as insipid as "I love you too".

I read somewhere that Anakin's "I hate sand" love lines to Padamé were analagous to "I hate sprouts. They're smelly and taste bad. But I love you cos you're not sprouts". That seems to be about the level of Lucas' writing ability.

the Clone Wars animations were infinitely better (and to be fair filled in much more of the Anakin being kick arse and hero-ey)

ignoring all the universe/continuity stuff which I entirely agree with, I actually quite enjoyed Episode 2 as a 'Star Wars film' - something happens, send Jedi to investigate it, find strange planets, cool bounty-hunter fights, 'get tied in to the bigger picture' kinda sideways, cool fight at end* just a shame all the detail in it was so shoddy. (Im not sure if that's the film with Wooden boy and bird going to a planet together cos Ive just removed that entire section from my memory as it made me feel physically sick)

  • [excluding SLJ who clearly has no real physical skills at all....his pretend fighting was about the worst Ive ever seen]

Lucas had a 'lucky hit' with the OT. He then tried other stuff that was rubbish, but for some reason, many were/are too polite to tell him he sucks.
I thought I was a bit of a Star Wars nerd, but what's OT?

Also, loving the Han ad-libs above! laugh

Hey kids want too see a cool film this summer?

The trailer being used for Star Wars:Phantom Menace 3d seems to be geared towards the under 9s.

”Oh yeah, I almost forgot, it’s not all fun!”, he enthuses, with a ring of truth that may lead many of you to nod in sage agreement.

^^^^ This, the first time I watched the trailer for TPM I literally had goosebumps it looked so good. Oh how naive I was.

The thing is all the elements were there to make it great, how the hell someone can manage to mess up a Star Wars movie I have no idea! I imagine a million Star Wars fans could have come up with a much better film. How the hell did people who are proffesional film makers, paid vast sums of money to do this for a living, not realise this was going to be a stinker. Did no one at any point stop and say, "Hang on a second, this is actually a bit sh*t"?

Compare it to the original 1977 cinema trailer for Star Wars - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gvqpFbRKtQ

Which just looks bad in a washed out boring pre-post production way. That was soon replaced by this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ba2TH-K7oiA which has more action and pizazz.

And then finally to this version - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g3_CFmnU7k

If it takes him at least 3 goes to get the trailer right................................. wink

Ps. I'm sure there was at least one more as well.

I'm sure loads did. The thing you are forgetting is that George Lucas had sole control and everyone is scared of him. I would imagine the people that you mention either were too scared to say, or if they were brave enough to say they were either ignored, shouted down, or fired.

Does it even matter that it was st?

Ok as a fan of the first three i was dissapointed and thought the new ones were ste. but i still paid money to watch the first one.

all the people who thought it would be st were being paid, do they care? maybe but maybe not.

how many billiones did they make while being ste? people still bought the dvds and the re imagined dvds and teh blue ray dvds and the 3d dvds.

studios don't care, they just make money. job done.

lucas lives in a massive rach and has more money than i can imagine. i live in fking doncaster.

But the irony is that George Lucas was the maverick film maker who bucked the Studio model to make the original Star Wars. Yet he has become what he hated.

It's kind of like Citizen Kane

I watched the original trilogy back to back last weekend. It made me happy.

Episodes 1-3 are so bad it's laughable. The irony is that Lucas' original quote was that "special effects are no substitute for a good story" (or words to that effect).
