All the posters listing 20 or 30 films are missing the point. That's too easy. We could all do that. Giving it some thought and reasoning, that's the hard part.
Ok, you're right smile

Listing all those was a massive cop out, I've narrowed down my top 5.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark - I actually watched Temple of Doom before this, so even though Raiders is superior to TOD this choice was a close one. Anyway, non stop action all the way, utterly brilliant film.

RoboCop - I was about 11 when I watched this on video with my grandad, worst babysitter ever right? I've been swearing like a trooper ever since. My jaw was on the floor start to finish and I still love it now. If you look past the sillyness and ultra violence It's a deep film which holds up well 30 years later. Oh, and some of the best quotes in movie history biggrin

Goodfellas - my favourite gangster/mafia film, from the opening scene to the last. Perfect cast, story, music, everything.

T2 - What can I say, other than it's got to be the ultimate sci-fi action film of all time.

Cannonball Run - love this film, got me Into cars and the blend of action and comedy is just perfect. Special mention goes to the all star cast that meant the film couldn't be replicated today. An underrated classic if ever there was one.

Found it very hard to pick only five! I'd probably choose differently if you asked me again in a week!

In no particular order

The Bourne Identity
First Blood
Pulp Fiction
Children of Men
Back to the Future

Killjoy...! If you're in the right frame of mind it's a hoot! It's a world away from The Shawshank Redemption I know, but then I've never been a fan of that anyway, I've tried watching it a few times but can't warm to it wink;)
Thanks for the horizon broadening, P5BNij. I was going to include Mary Poppins but feared an eternity of ridicule. I don't even bridle at Dick Van Dyke's accent. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without it.
Now then Dicky, that's a step too far... cough, mutter mumble... biggrin

Whatever us rabble think of each other's lists, long or short, I hope the OP's curiosity gets the better of him and he finds something to enjoy / discover / absorb which he may not have considered before wink

5 films is tough. My top 2 are easy but the rest are up for grabs.

1. Mrs Doubtfire - my aunt bought me this when I was a kid and I have always absolutely loved it. Williams performance is just superb.

2. Pulp Fiction - I was awestruck when I watched this.

3. Dredd - Probably my most left field cinema experience. I went in with 0 expectations. I just loved the tightness of the story, the style of it and the general theatre of it all.

4. Good Will Hunting - Best Supporting Actor for Robin Williams well deserved, I think.

5. The Truman Show - dunno what it is about this one but I watched it regularly for a long time.

Life of Brian - I now tend to look at all religions from the Monty Python viewpoint. “Blessed are the cheesemakers”, “gives a sign”, “Woderwick” and “who threw that stone?” are just a few of the gems.

Goldfinger - it looks rubbish now but was great in its time

Grand Prix - way better than the races and trivia that we get now

The Graduate - again just very funny when you were at that “awkward age”.

LA Confidential - at the start, you can’t see just where it is going, by the end you are riveted to your seat.

I think Goldfinger still looks good, some Bond films haven't aged well and I wouldn't advocate them unless the punter loved kitsch, or absurdity. But GF, FWL, OHMMSS, FYEO, they're pretty solid.

For me I guess I would interpret favourite films as being ones I can watch over and over... being a bit of a boring sod that means nothing challenging, just comfort movies. So, in no particular order:

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Dirty Harry
Smokey and the Bandit
The Thing from another world (1951)
Back to the Future

It's a struggle to limit a list of Directors to 10, so 5 top films is impossible.

But frequently watched is:

Shine (mental illness, classical music and true story)
Rear Window (Ultra glamorous Hitchcock slow burner)
Yojimbo (Kurosawa at his best)
Casablanca (Hopeless romance)
Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot (gentle humour to make you smile)

+ another 100, at least...

There's a website called Flickchart.com where you can rank movies against one another to create your list.

I used to have a pretty strong top 5 but it's now turned into a 4.

1. Godfather Part II
2. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
3. One Flew over the cuckoos nest
4. No Country for old men

Today I'm in a Spirited Away type of mood for #5. No film reinvigorates my imagination like Spirited Away does.

Shout outs to a few I don't think have been mentioned
There will be blood
The Pianist
The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford
Princess Mononoke
Jackie Brown
Chinatown
Leon
Life of Pi
Boyhood
Rain Man
Attack the block (I watched this 3 times back to back to back, really good insightful and fun commentary tracks)
Children of men
City of God
La Haine
The Intouchables
A Prophet
Let the right one in
Oldboy
A girl walks home alone at night
Tropic Thunder

Ah ha - the only person apart from OH who has seen A Girl Walks Home Alone . My friends couldn't understand my enthusiasm for a US /Iranian pulp vampire movie with a skateboarding heroine .... Great soundtrack too.

How about your 77 year old auntie saying she really liked that film with the talking bear...

Ted?
