Star Wars: The Last Jedi (CONTAINS SPOILERS)
Discussion
Just got back. Awful.
It had moments where you thought, 'It's Star Wars, I'm watching Star Wars at the cinema again...this is awesome!' And the rest was just dire. Agree on the comments about social engineering and forced messages. I thought they should have cast Hillary Clinton for that purple haired captain at the end. It seemed that kind of film. Moralising when it should just have been entertaining. It had no flow, no real point or trajectory. It was shallow with lots of padding. Just crap. Worse than Phantom Menace I would personally, honestly say.

Going the same way as transformers folks. Its a film whose story line is based on focus groups of what they think 8 year olds want. And its all safe politically correct character development.
The whole film has an agenda of political correctness - the currant form of intolerance which we all have to suffer. And an especially pernicious form of intolerance that is difficult to argue against as it presents itself as tolerance and the uninformed sheep like masses blindly accept it as right.
Weak beige female characters who are all wholesome and just with cowardly non effective male roles. Rubbish and unrealistic.

Well, the good news is that the two directors were sacked from that one a few months ago because ... they were making it too funny. Now Richie Cunningham's at the helm. I'm hoping The Fonz makes a guest appearance.

I have read that Hollywood is in decline, because of both mediocre movies and the sex/pedo scandals that, from what I have read, are only going to get worse as more comes to light. The whole film has an agenda of political correctness - the currant form of intolerance which we all have to suffer. Yet they double down on their own ideological agendas that doesn't quite sync with the masses who are supposed to pay to watch the garbage they now produce. The last Transformers movie was unwatchable to us. I actually bought it on Amazon, thinking it couldn't be that bad, but ended turning it off and deleting it completely from my movie lists after 20 minutes.
I don't see anything wrong in have strong male and female protagonists, worked well in the OT, Raiders of the Lost Ark and a slew of other older movies that have stood the test of time. The used to produce films with great stories and characters, now it seems preaching to the unwashed masses is what we want, while some of them do the polar opposite of what they preach!
It is little wonder the Hollywood film industry is in decline.

The one I'm most surprised about is Kermode; arcs, skipping stones of narrative etc. absolute nonsense. This is only the 2nd time I've fundamentally disagreed with him, now I don't like everything he likes, however, I usually see some merit in his views, in this case there are none.
After watching the film, and listening to Kermode for some time, I too am puzzled. Some kore thoughts.
The first two thirds put me in mind of family guy star wars, or a piss-take
Phasma is not Boba Fett, BF was a keystone character who was plot intrinsic. Phasma is someone created to stand out and 'be cool'...thus failing
So JJ is taking on the third installment...after Rian ripped up all JJ had set in place? Someone just told me JJ was stcanned and then cajoled back...does this mean he'l write the second one as a dream sequence and Luke will wake up in a shower?
Why did I l really like some bits and not others, for the genus script doctor, C Fisher, who for me was also the stand out in this film.

The blantent love interest for the China was a tad...obvious...ergh modern films.
Love the Kev SMith vid, very funny.
Reminds me of a story a mate told me, my mate was in the room when his mate (a famous author) took a phone call from Steven SPeilberg. Spielberg wanted to make a film based on a book about a character who becomes apprentice to Death the grim reaper. But he wanted to leave out Death, because American audiences wuldn't 'get it.' He opened his call with promises to make the author a very rich man, when the author responded he already was rich, what he wanted was to be happy, basically the movie diudn't happen because Hollywood is fked.
Inserted love interest for CHina market

Mighty, mighty box office numbers. Hit the upper end of projections and got closer to TFA in the US than I would ever have expected. Be interesting to see if the drop is bigger in a few weeks, the lower audience feedback doesn't bode as well for repeat viewings.
In at no 10 is the us and 17 in the world...we'll see how the second week goes
it could make a billion and be a flop, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 made 800 or 700 millish...and was considered a flop

Some interesting comments, I listened to a bunch of Kevin Smith's 90 minute review earlier and he touched on the almost complete unravelling of everything that JJ had set up quite a lot. Interesting now that JJ is back and at the helm of 9.
My initial assumption was that Johnson was at the helm because he's a yes man for Kennedy/Lucasfilm/Disney, and whilst that must be true to an extent (they've proved to be pretty brutal when directors come in that don't fit) it does make you wonder what the balance is, JJ and Johnson have made two very different films.

Oh
and I cannot forgive "Laser Sword", it's a Light Sabre FFS - why try so hard to ruin the whole "A long time ago In a Galaxy Far, Far Away" part of it by making it so Earth Centric, I'm sure one of them said "God Willing" too - God Willing? GOD WILLING? Hang on a minute, after 40 years of Jedi and Sith being the only mentioned, and little know religion in the Star Wars Galaxy, we're suddenly introducing Middle Eastern Religions eh?
That was it!! Thank you, I was trying to remember what bit of dialogue really jarred wit me, that was it, saying 'godspeed.'and I cannot forgive "Laser Sword", it's a Light Sabre FFS - why try so hard to ruin the whole "A long time ago In a Galaxy Far, Far Away" part of it by making it so Earth Centric, I'm sure one of them said "God Willing" too - God Willing? Makes me think this Rian Johnson is a bit of a gimp, and the accusations I've read in this thread of him saying a big FU to JJ and the fans by ripping up everything from TFA is true.
TFA made one oblique reference to the prequels, but we get Sidious and Sith in this one, plus the godspeed and laser sword, and disparing of many things, rey's parents, the homing light sabre, etc etc etc.
A friend just showed me this, Mark Hamill disagreed with Rian on everything he wrote about Luke, everything...wow.
Mark Hamill hurts

The entire plot was a shambles.
One example of about 10 or more I could mention...
I mean why does Laura Dern not tell everyone her plan instead of causing a needless mutiny?
Why didn't she abandon ship with everyone else, unless ships capable of hyperdrive don't have an autopilot function?
It just makes absolutely no sense!
I can't believe people are defending this hot steaming turd of a movie.

Yeah, pretty weird that.
SO what does one do...show the world outside of fighting? Or is it limited as the RLM guys say?
Watched RLM now, they nailed it.
https://youtu.be/L9hwGZFPSmw?t=28m30s
the guy, Rian, came into it as new and decided he would ignore everything...rather a strange tack to plan on the second installment of a three film deal....it's just odd....Imagine Back to the Future 2 if Doc Brown told Marty he was adopted and had no connection to his family, just too weird.

I like the theory the RLM guys have that Rian did it just to massively troll Star Wars fans and tbh it has some merit as I really can't understand why else you would do it. He has either never watched a Star Wars film before or doesn't care. SO what does one do...show the world outside of fighting? Or is it limited as the RLM guys say?

Still I can't imagine Disney would just allow him to blow away 40 years of Star Wars culture, hell he even blew away stuff from TFA without putting some serious thought into it though. Perhaps they did some number crunching, decided that Star Wars fans will probably watch any old crap anyway and decided to go after the non Star Wars fans instead.
It's a bizarre film, bizarre creative decisions and bizarre critic reaction to what is an average film at best. Again as one of the RLM guys said, I keep expecting to wake up, realise it was all a bad dream and watch the real Last Jedi movie.
