On the subject of whether this ACTUALLY IS an Alien prequel here's what Damon Lindelof the screenwriter had to say:
The thing about a prequel is, as fascinating as it may to watch Anakin turn to the dark side of the Force, there's an inevitability to it. You know when you go in the prequel can only cover A to Y and then Z is gonna be the preexisting material. You can't end it in an exciting or surprising way. You can only end it in the inevitable way. ...
When I went to go see The Thing prequel, for example, I'm assuming this movie is going to be the sequence of events that led up to a dog being infected by the Thing and then being chased by a helicopter across the frozen tundra-because I know then what happens next because I saw The Thing. And that's exactly what it was. On a certain level, you're satisfied because if you're calling a movie a prequel, that's what you're expecting. On another level, you sort of walk out going, "Boy I wish there was a little bit more room for me to not exactly know what I was walking into."
In my opinion, in order to define Prometheus as a prequel, Is it set in the Alien universe? ... If you just watch the teaser trailer, and you see how the word Prometheus reveals itself ... or look at the production design, you don't need me to tell you anything.
So then the next question is: Is it a prequel to Alien? To that, I can't really answer the question because my definition of prequel, the A-to-Y definition, I hope it's not. I hope that this movie can be surprising. The ending of this movie; the sequel to Prometheus is not Alien. The sequel to Prometheus, if it does well and people like it, would be another movie that goes off in its own direction, that runs tangential to Alien

Ridley seems to be suggesting that the film could well be a PG-13 in the US which would make it a 12a over here.
That's disappointing in extremis.
I'm kinda hoping that if thats true he'll also be re-editing it to bring out a 15 or 18 version...but I don't hold out much hope.

Director Ridley Scott was again asked about what rating he hopes the film will get, and he answered with a lengthy rant about the MPAA ratings board and the economics of filmmaking. The upshot is you should probably expect this movie to be PG-13, since he makes it clear that he wants Prometheus to make money:
I want certification for this film that allows me to make as large a box office as possible...The studios wrestle constantly with these ridiculous adjustments to whether it's PG13, PG15, R, double R and it does, to a certain extent, affect the box office, which is arithmetic, which is not a cash register, it's how they get their money back and if studios don't get their money back we don't have any movies.
And so it is important that films are successful and I am fully supportive of that because I'm not just a director, I'm also not stupid. I've been in this business long enough and to a certain extent I'm a businessman. So when a big film fails it's disastrous for all of us. When a big film wins it's terrific for all of us, whether you like the film or not, it's really cool. So the adjustment of the ratings… are inconsistent and ridiculously inconsistent, so I can start talking about films that have got PG13 this year, which are absolutely fking ridiculous… is anyone in here from the MPA or whatever it is? …Get your house in order.
The same article also says that they'll be more viral videos available shortly but each will be about 1 character in particular.

Bit stupid to have a synthetic in 2033 imo.
Great News!!!
Prometheus is rated 18 in Spain!
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/rorschachsr...
...and as stated in the above report, thats RARE in Europe.
Note: In Spain a 15 year old can see an 18 rated film if they are accompanied by an appropriate adult I'm reliably informed - so it could still be a 15 rated film in the UK I suppose.

Speaking with MTV, Fox CEO Tom Rothman talks about the potential rating for Ridley Scott's highly anticipated science fiction film Prometheus. He says that "Not one frame [of Prometheus] will be cut", and confirms that "If that means it’s an R rating, so be it". This should please those who wished to see an R-rating for the movie. He also discusses the "Bold" title of the film.

Anybody got a linky to re-run?
Strangely, although there is much evidence to the contrary, I still have a suspicion that this film might still get a 15 or even 12A rating in this country despite what that Fox suite said in an interview the other day.
Whilst the soundtrack sounds VERY eerie nothing I've seen in the trailers leads me to believe that this is going to have the same sense of dread or horror as the original Alien film.
I REALLY hope I'm wrong but my gut feeling about this is getting stronger.

Excellent analysis of that new trailer with many astute assumptions:

“I’ve only made a mistake once on cutting a film short — I won’t say what it is right now, because this is not the time — but I removed 17 minutes off a movie, and I didn’t ruin it, but it wasn’t [as effective]. In this instance, you got a pretty good version here, pretty good cut. We’re running at about — I think without the end titles, which normally run about four to five minutes — we’re running one hour, fifty-nine minutes and change. It’s very tight, it’s what it should be.”
