have them all on DVD, and Yojimbo (unsurprisingly, as it's in my top 10), Rashomon and Throne of blood.

How can nobody have mentioned the Godfather?

And Hot Fuzz? Almost the worst thing I've ever actually watched from start to finish, second only to Shaun of the Dead.
You haven't seen many films then.

Yes, that would certainly be included in my revised list (don't we all revise our list of top ten movies depending on mood/current partner/circumstances)?

Shirley McLean, Jack Lemmon and Fred MacMurray at their height directed by the maestro Billy Wilder- wonderful.

So many people have already hit upon films that are in my top 100 (and that's the size of the problem in whittling down). As others have said the top 10 changes with external influences but at this cusp mine are:
A day at the Races
Vertigo
El Cid
Goldfinger
Gladiator
Bull Durham
Aguerre Wrath of God
Road to Perdition
Once Upon a Time in the West
Dirty Harry

So many others I could choose, in fact delete Bull Durham and insert Big Lebowski

You are robbed.

I'd be fizzing if I had that film spoiled for me.

Usual Suspects MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT - if this is possible in this day and age.

Good film, over rated imo. Which twist do you refer to, the fact that Verbal is "he who shall not be named" or the fact that his story is made up from snippets of information found around the office mixed with the truth, rendering the story redundant? The plot is famously flawed, this film is all about big perforamces, not plot twists, the writing is akin to "I woke up and it was all a dream."

While I'm at it, Peter Postlethwaite covered in gravy, speaking a Welsh/Indian accent, is not amazing, it's silly. Other performances Stephen Baldwin- average at best, Del Toro- the charm of his garbled delivery is lost on me.
The whole excellence of the film relies on Byrne and Spacey imo. People can like what they want but I hope they know why they like something. This film appears on way too many lists. Stop it. smile

No idea of my top 10 but I know "some like it hot" would be there for me.

If anyone has not seen it then you have missed out.
I always include it in my top three.

I find these types of threads a little bit tedious as

a) they are started with amazing frequency on PH (three or four times a year at least)

b) they are extremely personal and subjective

c) the lists strongly reflect the age demographic of the person making the selection. Nearly all my favourite films are from the 50s, 60s and 70s - because of my age

Perhaps it is time to make the topic a "sticky" (like the "found on youtube" or "James Bond Joke" threads).

Reading through everyone's lists just reminds me why trying to draw up a personal top-ten is pointless, but here goes anyway - below is my top ten film as of 3pm-ish on the 1st of August based on the ones I remember, the list will probably be different by the time I've finished typing it.

The Departed.
Stars Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
Rocknrolla.
Forest Gump
Casino Royale
The Dark Knight
L.A. Confidential
A History of Violence
No Country for Old Men
Eastern Promises

Honourable Mention for - The Devil Wears Prada, not the best film every made, but I watched every moment of it without being distracted which is odd for me, despite not caring about any of the subject matter and have to admit I really liked it.
