I'm not making out cyberbullying (how I hate that word) should be ignored but let's be straight, it's hardly a matter for the police in all but exceptional cases. Sorry but I had to laugh when you said 'this stuff can get properly nasty'. Properly nasty in what sense, that a kid might be forced to 'unfriend' someone on Facebook, or block a number on their mobile, or heaven help us abstain from XBox Live for a couple of weeks? Yes it probably is technically bullying and no it's not pleasant but it doesn't even compare with what I call bullying. It seems to me we're creating a bunch of pathetic kids who are taught to run to teacher or the police every time someone says a bad word to them, rather than sort out their own problems. As to the idea of a kid getting a criminal record for sending a text message (a non-threatening text message at that), it beggars belief.
I have only just turned 30 and can't believe this cyberbullying is anywhere near the stuff we had, you always have the choice of not using a phone, computer, xbox etc etc. I remember being in a scuffle at school one lunch time on 'the field', the nastiest evilest teacher came to break out it up and simply asked 'are you two finished???' and marched us off to post lunch registration, that was the end of it. No repercussions, none needed, we were both happy we had bloodied each others noses and my old man took the piss when I got home.

Friend of mine used to teach young Vinnie - sent me an SMS last night saying that he has 'more natural talent than you do Actus Reus', and I'd like to think that I'm not stupid. He also said that he was 'good as gold' when he taught him, and said that broken homes are more often than not the cause of real problems.
This may sound a bit churlish but I have to roll my eyes at how atrociously behaved but not completely thick children are built up by their elders as having huge potential. This Vinnie character, not content with ruining his own education also seemed to thrive in disrupting the entire class with his presence.

Sure, a marriage breakup will be devastating for children, but probably 20-30% of other pupils will be in a similar position, and they don't all self destruct so badly.

A promising young footballer at best.

Exactly. A couple of times I've seen the teacher stand back and let the fight take its course. I was once bullied for a short time by some grunt, when I was about 14 in the 80s. Ended up with him hitting me from behind in the corridor and splitting my face open - blood literally up the wall. That resulted in the teacher asking me if I wanted to pursue the matter (whatever that meant). I said no, forget it. That afternoon I arranged a 'do' with him on the yard for the next morning's break time and half the school turned up. I was crapping myself but the bully bottled it and didn't show, and when we went to find him he refused to fight and completely lost face amongst all his mates. I never heard of him bullying anyone again after that and the situation was sorted. I can't imagine what would happen these days, parents running all over the place, social workers, police, criminal records, oh my.
