Enjoying this right now, some amazing footage of the trenches from the air. Lots of stuff I didn't know, for example the use of underground mines. A reminder of the sacrifice and utter destruction in the battles of that war, and how comfortable my generation is.

Saw that last night, some fascinating stuff. I've seen a couple of mine craters up close in the forests of Verdun and they're huge! Amazing how close the allis and Germans passed each other as well in the race to mine and plant explosives.
Paschendale - just why?

Logical really - the enemy's dug in, you can't easily go over the top so why not go under?

Only saw a few bits of this as the OH was watching something on the other side, but it is quite thought provoking - certainly I can't imagine tunnelling only to have the blood of my comrades run past me.

I think every school should take it's pupils to Flanders and the cemetaries.

It was very interesting, but equally depressing !!

....and to think 21 years later we did it all over again.
