Increasing tax rates will increase tax take. The suggestion that it will not is based on bad economics.
The suggestion that it will not is based on recent historical evidence of the top income tax band.

....
People are quite good at gaming tax changes IMO - particularly when they know these are temporary.

Getting around annual land taxes is much more difficult.

We seem to have a lot of "sin" taxes if levying them does not change behaviour to avoid them...

What about those that wholeheartedly support your wish to pay more tax & advise you how to do so?

Could you confirm how much extra tax you have paid or will be paying?

So non-home owner wants to increase taxes on home owners...
Sid, you’re probably too busy inventing new IDs to have read the thread properly - he’s already a net contributor and says he should pay more income tax. Not sure your ‘politics of envy’ schtick really applies here.

Cue the shrill “that’s not what I said”, “nonsense” etc.

How’s it going selling life insurance?

Surely even you are not so thick as to realise that voluntary tax donations by non-wealthy individuals is not sufficient to properly fund our public services?

I like the attempts to characterise me as selfish and biased by people who live in very expensive houses and who drive very expensive cars whose only goal is to reduce the amount of tax they as individuals pay so that they can buy more luxuries laugh

Oh, I forgot, it's because they "work so hard and deserve it".

Halfwits.
You’re not a bad person, just naive. A few years of living amongst the sharp elbowed and kneed will soon knock you into shape.

Leaving aside your repeated insults, I didn't suggest any effect on funding public services.

I said that if you feel you should pay more tax then there is a mechanism for you to do so. Are you actually doing so or just mouthing off to signal your moral superiority?

Have you paid the extra tax you think you should?

With you there, I also paid a lot less under poll tax, so that's one major tax reform which resulted in some folk paying less tax.
And it didn't work. No point in having a reform which is a disaster.
Recently Michael Portillo stated that the Poll Tax was ill conceived, as he also stated he should know being one of the main architects of the ill fated policy.

Nope that’s just speculation. What’s certain is that LVT will create a new layer of parasite called “tenant” who enjoy local amenities they don’t pay for (which is ridiculous and unacceptable)
Parasite? I pay my landlord's mortgage on her buy-to-let, plus give her a profit, plus pay the council tax. In my last property where I lived for two years I probably interacted with the letting agent 4 or 5 times. The only repair that was needed was to replace a microwave that went on fire. My current property I have needed one thing fixed in the 6 months I have been here - a lampshade that fell off. My landlords don't work, they live very very well from a portfolio of buy-to-let properties. They don't pay income tax. They probably shield most of their BTL profits from corporate tax. Who exactly is the parasite?
Your choice though?

You’re the second to pose that rather creepy and intrusive question. It seems to come up quite often amongst the PH right-wing as if you believe it is some kind of trump card (see the banal “how many asylum seekers are you going to put up in your house?” gambit too).

It’s actually a very weak argument (not really an argument at all) just a meaningless question designed to look clever. Anyone asking it should first be prepared to link to all their own personal and corporate information.

Don’t judge everyone by your own low standards chaps!

They’re probably wondering what you’re on about - pretty well every country has some kind of property tax.

On that you’re wrong.

Unless the poor are now buying band F+ houses?
So someone earning 1m a year pays 20x the council tax of someone earning 50k a year?
Why should they?

They already pay more than 35x as much income tax and NI.

Fill your boots - make some voluntary contributions. How many have you made thus far?

btw, where are you paying that much council tax for a one bed property?
Voluntary contributions - a nonsense the right wing like to suggest. I am sure that me as an individual paying a little extra in tax is going to solve the massive funding shortfalls our public services face.

Edinburgh. In fairness, in Scotland council tax includes water and sewerage.
You've tried then? Every little helps...set a good example etc.

So you don't really pay that much in council tax.

As for your moaning about your landlord, if it's so easy to do all this, why are you renting? Use all that extra tax you have stuffed under your mattress ready to hand over to the government when you can be arsed and go out and buy yourself a BtL portfolio. Then use all the extra from that to give even more voluntarily to the government.

We need more money to fund our public services. Those with the deepest pockets should bear the biggest burden. You may think the amount of tax currently paid by someone on £1m a year is egregious, but quite frankly that person still lives a life of great privilege, and can afford to contribute more.
