Jobsworths - Springsteen concert
Discussion
They were discussing this on Radio 5 Live yesterday. As I understand it the gig started some 1/2 hour late, so if they had started on time it would not have been an issue. I've beeen to see Queen and Fleetwood Mac over the last few years and although me and the wife can travel 100s of miles, park the car, get a meal and still be in at least 20 minutes before the advertised start time it really pisses me off when the band sauters on 30-40 minutes behind schedule. It serves Macca and Brucie right, its just crap event management.
at this thread.
Rules are rules, and they're there to be unswervingly enforced, to the letter. I actually think they should have stormed the stage and beaten McCartney and Springsteen to a pulp, and thrown them in prison for a spell, that'll get them twisting and shouting.
Also got to laugh at the way that it's all so complicated and reasonable - not just some guy who likes his authority. There's some complex formula involving traffic flows, availability of emergency services, public transport usage and the alignment of Jupiter that will all be cocked up royally and irrevocably if the concert overruns half an hour.

A shame that Britain, once again, can't just relax and enjoy an event. By contrast, he played Milan earlier in the tour and was allowed to play the second longest set they've ever played, long into the night. Crowd and band had an amazing time by all accounts. It's a pleasure seeing a performer still enjoying the act of playing live to an appreciative audience and not just doing the bare contracted minimum.
Hate the British attitude to things sometimes
Who decides what's good? If any Tom, Dick or Harry can play as long as they like (Springsteen fits into this category if you're not a fan) we'd have to put up with Vanilla Ice at midnight when he should have packed up long ago.Hate the British attitude to things sometimes
The concert was advertised to finish at a specific time, plus the crowd had over three hours of the pompous tt, enough. He got an extra ten minutes to finish up, if he couldn't hit his finale in those minutes he's not the "entertainer" people think he is!
Boo hoo, somebody turned his guitar and mike off, let's put it on the news! That's what I hate about Britain sometimes, the pointless bks that people consider news. Essentially this "Concert finishes nearly at advertised time" hardly worthy of a segment on the news regardless of which string twanger is playing! (unless Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain get reincarnated and have some new material with John Lennon!)
nuffink to do wiv elf n safety apparently...
....
As a longstanding Bruce Springsteen fan and one of the crowd at Hard Rock Calling, I was doubly disappointed to hear Live Nation give 'health and safety' as the reason for cutting short Saturday's gig.
The fans deserve the truth: there are no health and safety issues involved here. While public events may have licensing conditions dictating when they should end, this is not health and safety and it is disingenuous of Live Nation to say so.
It's ironic that this excuse has been used in relation to Bruce Springsteen, who certainly knows what real health and safety is all about - look at the words of 'Factory' from Darkness on the Edge of Town referring to the toll that factory work can take on the health of blue collar workers.
People will now only be able to speculate what the final number should have been. Given that he'd already played Wrecking Ball and that Paul McCartney was on stage, how about Don't let me down?

I imagine it would be easy to have a lot of hypocrisy around this case.
Just because it was Springsteen and Macca - that doesn't make it ok. What if it was SlipKnot? or Korn? Many millions of people around the world like their music, but because it's not an ex-Beatle you can guarantee those same people who wrote articles saying it was unacceptable, would have equally derided overrunning "st" music.

What a dhead - police state just 'cause he can't inflict his godawful music on the locals any longer. Maybe he should step off his private jet a bit longer and try living somewhere that is actually a Police state.
I don't really care, can't hear them from here. Maybe they should choose their venues more carefully if they want to play on through the night.

Also, you're a queer type of music fan if you prefer the artists you go to see not to add value by playing all night.

Well said Miami Steve. Britain just can't let others enjoy things it seems. Never met a nation so obsessed with what other people do and whether they should be allowed. Odd.What a dhead - police state just 'cause he can't inflict his godawful music on the locals any longer. If they want to play all night, then it's surely a simple matter for them to arrange so to do?Also, you're a queer type of music fan if you prefer the artists you go to see not to add value by playing all night.
After all, it's not as if they haven't got a vast and well-oiled commercial and administrative machine enabling them to get product in front of consumers, is it?
Springsteen's people talk to Boris's people, etc etc.
I read this as damned if you do and damned if you don't...
Cut it short - Outrage as fans 'cheated'
Let it run - Outrage as 'thousands of fans' left in the rain etc. as they can't get home..If I recall from living in London the last tube is around 0015...and the 'fight' buses probably couldn't handle the excess unless extra ones were put on..which would have been impossible to arrange in the limited time when the band decides to overrun...
Having lived in west London for 8 years - noise wasn't ever a problem..it was bloody noisy all the time! What with the emergency services, aircraft and general noise going on until at least 0100 most weekends...
It was one of the reasons I moved out to the country...

I get where the rules people are coming from but I just don't see that this kind of thing is an everyday occurrence enough for it to need any sort of legislation.
For a start, it won't happen with every Tom, Dick and Harry, as most 'pop' acts these days have enormously complex lighting plots and backing tracks that are all computer managed to the second. There can be no deviation from the set list and the gig will be the same night in night.
The E Street Band are one of the few remaining stadium acts that love it or loathe it, still play old fashioned rock and roll, and thus are able to improvise, jam, play requests and huge bandtsanding encores if they feel like it. Can't we be nationally spontaneous, ever??
I don't mean to sound grumpy but I've been feeling the British need for rules and regulations to have become a bit claustrophobic of late and was dismayed to discover that these days, even Germany is more laid back than we are about this sort of stuff!
Anyway, I doubt it will happen again as the rules people have won.
Incidentally, no real loss as I was at HR Calling several years ago when Aerosmith headlined andive literally never seen a duller, less enthused crowd than London. Grim.

Not met many nations then, have you. In any case you are ignoring the fact that in this case allowing one lot of people to do what they wanted to do would, at the same time, would be preventing other people from doing what they wanted to do. That's what rules are for, not to stop people doing what they like, but to strike a balance between the wishes and needs of various different people.

To me it's like living in a flat. You accept upstairs paying until 6am a couple of nights a year so you can do the same. If people just showed a bit of give and take, the balance could be struck easily and more satisfactorily to both sides, I think.
And I concede that no, I haven't the intimate knowledge of other nations that I have of the UK. Based on my limited experience, I find the attitudes of the Mediterranean countries fits better with my own personality. And before the usual lot start, yes I probably will go as and when I can.
