Star Wars films are good examples. The acting made Star Wars brilliant. When you have the same director and same music, but mostly poor actors (who need a competent director), you get episode one, and the next two.
You cannot edit out poor or bad acting, you can only allow it to be seen, that's why editors rank lower, they can manipulate but not create, they need good stuff to work with to begin with or all they can do is obscure, they can save a bad film, but they cannot create one, only enhance it.
They're jobs are still important, and I wouldn't downgrade them, but if you have stinky director/writing and acting, then it's a stinker no matter what else goes on.
