I am curious to know why British Troops are in Afghanistan today anyway, what do they do on a day to day basis?
Where have you been for the past eight years?

Have you read any newspapers?
Did you watch any of Ross Kemp's TV series on Sky?
Have you read any of the myriad books that are now available on the subject?

A complete and utter waste of time, money and most importantly British lives.

The Government needs to sort its own st house out.

Cynical I maybe, but the thin veil of how wonderful Western democracy would be for Afghanistan (which will never happen) has so blatantly been used as a cover for boosts in contracts and earnings for large defence industries.

sounds entirely reasonable to me.

This will never end.
These people do not have the will or mental capacity to negotiate a peace.
All they understand is what (they aretold) their little book says and anyone who disagrees, or has more than them must be killed. (cos the little book says so)

Withdraw and let them get on with it.
I actually think their "little book" has very little to do with this.

They are a fiercely independent people. They resent foreign intereference in their affairs, They don't even like the idea of central government from Kabul by their own people. They are tribal by nature and dio not want or understand Western style democracy. Therefore, trying to enforce such a system on them is a total waste of time.
Spot on.

Don't really have a great deal to say on this issue apart from bring them home, and bring them home now.

Does bringing them home not just turn the place back into a bigger st hole than before? Might as well leave Bin laden a mint on a pillow!

It's a war so there will be losses, grim though that is. Everyone is in this eyes open.

What a grotesque event. Our deepest condolences to all the families. This really has brought home to me how utterly pointless this misadventure is. Enough is enough now..leave this wretched, anarchic, beastly country to its own end. Who cares about Afghanistan ? Those terrorists who want to kill us and our children will do so reagrdless..Interseting to note that not one post on here supports our involvement...

But what is the 'goal' of this war, I don't see us making them like us and we shouldn't be trying that anyway as it won't work?

But you could apply that theory to a lot of issues and nothing would get done. The world is small place....on a global scale this is like the UK saying East London is rough so sod 'em...pull the police out.

The goal of this war presumably is to show support with our American allies...

It's time to get out of there.

Give them all the guns they want and let the uneducated nutters get on with it.

Why not give them some planes and a GPS device?

It's all very well saying "lets go" but if you cant do so on the basis of "and fk em" Sad but true, these things require some thought otherwise it WILL come back and bite us.

Does anyone know what the solution is for these areas of the world where they like bashing the fk out of each other. Leaving well alone doesn't seem to work. Invading doesn't seem to work.

I'm guessing education is the key, however that'll never be practical.
A century of organized opression is the only thing I can think of.

Or should we get some locals with an IQ higher than a rodent to actually go around and canvas the population as to what they would like. Then just do that, whatever it might be if it doesn't affect any other country.

Commonsense party says:

When in Rome do as Romans do.

When in Afghanistan and Iraq...please dont do as you would in America/UK..they dont get it, they think we are stupid and we can enforce st out there.

Im amazed at how our government can be so naive and stupid in wartime operations like this!

Agreed.

The sad fact is, as with Africa, the only time these places work properly is when they are ruled by force.

I imagine the phrase 'Africans are rubbish at running Africa' probably holds firm for Afghanistan. Colonialism is the answer hehe

a) do you think they all want the same thing?

b) do you think that they will give you an truthful answer?

Afghanis have a habit of telling whoever they think is in charge what they want to hear. If the Taliban control the village, they will tell the Taliban leaders that they are loyal to the Taliban. If NATO forces are in control of the village, they will be loyal to them.

As usual, our problem is that we assume that the logical, reasonably educated and independent way of thinking we have in Western culture is easily transferrable to what is essentially a feudal society - where the local overlords hold sway and the populace by and large comply with the local overlord's wishes. Anything otherwise might not be good for one's health.

Tony Blair's eldest son should 'man up', join the sharp end of the armed forces, and get out there.

I think if EU President elects boy was in the firing line we'd be out of there tout-sweet.

Sad day.

My view has been, for a long time, to build a 50ft wall round Afghanistan and simply let those inside get on with it. Sorry, you've had the chances thrown at you by the bucket load and it has simply been thrown back in our faces.
Yeah, how dare they not appreciate us invading their country, blowing it up a bit, generally bossing them around and imposing a phoney democracy on them.
Ungrateful bds!

Not the first time actually, there have already been several such incidents.
