Okay a year ago it def wasnt the flu was it.... ? the infection rate, the mobbed hospitals, the knock on from it, it def wasnt the flu was it ?

I can guarentee that if this vaccine was not having the effect that it is, and we were still raw to the virus then that headline would not be, would it.

No way in hell would be be saying we could live with it like the flu as at that point with no inherent immunity through the population and the effect that it would have on the population and then the knock on to the hospitals... it really wouldnt be a live with it like we live with the flu.

Now with the vaccine out and people getting the protection from the ravages of the virus, the vaccine stopping them getting the disease working wonders that now we may be possible to say that we can live with it like we live with the flu.

Without the vaccine ? nah...

With the vaccine, and the effect it has yes indeed it will be more like the flu affects the population.

That headline is a product of the effect that the vaccine has within the population.
The control measures have proved ( pretty much ) that this virus is about 10 times more virulent than flu.
A year ago NHS hospitals were the quietest they've been for many years

Pubs gearing up for first week in April according to manager of my local, which is an M&B.
I won't go to a pub much until they are normal. Maybe the odd place with a nice beer garden. But tape, masks, apps, spacing farce is not my idea of a nice pub experience.

Once they aren't on furlough they need to feel some of the pain to keep up the pressure to end the madness
Same here on 'normal' pubs. I went along with it to support them last year as much as possible. Now at very least I want to be able to turn up un-booked, sit outside, and not have to eat. That was bearable last summer.

If the vaccines fail to do what is hoped, then we would need to deal with it like all the original plans had in mind. Well untill they watched a totalitarian regimes lock all its people up. That would be allowed the virus to take it's course. It will take the people it takes and eventually it will just become another cold virus as our natural immunity takes affect. The best we could do is manage the speed it travels through the population.

There is no way we can hide under the bed for much longer.

You say that but it's just as well the vaccines do seem to have been remarkably effective tbh. We as in the politicians everywhere literally bet the house on them working and it's not a particularly comforting thought to wonder what might have happened had the vaccines failed or been delayed much more....

Exactly.

Dont fall for this stuff. Again.

Be assured, this is just to quell any grumblings of dissent from both public and backbenchers.

Wont belong before the next "story" is devised to kill any suggestion of reopening stone dead. Just before the 22nd id say.

How many times do they need to do this before people get whats going on?

Agreed. Some time soon, big boy pants have to be donned, or we really are in danger of fulfilling the Nostradamus prophecy. “The world to an end will come, when from the air comes the King of terror”. “King of terror” ‘Corona viruses’ are so called because the protein spikes resemble a crown. There were also lots of references to where it would come from in the famous Quatrains. Lots of references to China, and Italy.

They've ran out of road. We'd be reopening in May even without a vaccine, out of necessity if nothing else. In many ways the vaccine has elongated lockdown

Wet led pubs, nightclubs, events and travel will remained fked, with or without a vaccine.

Although......everyone vaccinated by June? Maybe these could come back then? (Apart from travel, because new variant rolleyes)

Edit: the above named industries (plus football) will be begging for a covipass system to prevent certain bankruptcy. I fear the government will oblige them, not out of charity, but to further their own nefarious ends. Blair never got ID cards through......this will be it.

In my part of the Lakes were below we're below 80 cases per 100k now, the usual social media brigades were up in arms while we were in tier 1 then tier 2 in following the November lockdown about tourists breaking rules and travelling here. While in tier 2 you could only go to hospitality venues in your family group so I doubt that had much to do with it.

We had the late December early January spike like everywhere else getting up to 300ish per 100k with the hospital's really full.
https://www.tomorrowspapers.co.uk/

You can zoom in on The Times. Claims that the country will move through tiers nationally, which may be different to the autumn tiers. With fortnightly reviews

Apparently all schools going back on the 8th. Great news if so. No doubt labour and the unions will disagree

The Sunday Times are less optimistic on pubs (hi, Gadgetmac). Superfast opening is pubs and restaurants by early may, and that isn't considered likely. Middle speed is end of May, and slow is August yikes

Must be different scenarios being briefed because the Sunday Mail go with "back in the pub garden for Easter" (actual date: end of March). That will do smile

Sunday Times go with "Picnics and coffee in the park from March 8th"

Sunday Express "Tory MPs say to lift all restrictions from end of May"

Yup, that's the bigger picture. It's not a great reset (they can't monetise the great reset...quite the opposite) its population control via ID cards. Maybe a smart chip in a credit card sized thing, to avoid the problem of not everyone having a smart phone, or turned off due to low battery.

With Labour cheering them on, how many rebels will vote against? 20? (All Tories?) Regardless, there's pretty much a theoretical maximum of 75 (judging by the tiers and lockdown voting) so it will sail through

And the public will beg for it. Nothing to hide, nothing to fear and all that

Did anyone else find the headline today utterly hilarious? After months (a year) of people saying ‘it’s just the flu’ and being told the opposite ‘it’s nothing like the flu’, the shiny faced chinless wonder of a health secretary comes out with that little gem!

Well done you absolute moron. You’ve angered all the people who’ve been saying it all along, and all the people who think it’s airborne Ebola and we need to be masked up and isolated for the rest of time.

Now, the entire purpose of rushing through the vaccine and getting millions vaccinated as quickly as possible is to be able to reopen the schools, the shops and the pubs, so fking get on with it you tt.

I can’t see it myself. This is a government that can’t get track and trace to work. Even if they do get ID/Card tracking working, it’ll be stored in a copy of Excel from 1995 and lose most of the date within the first couple of days.

Thats a fair point. Won't be ready by summer. Summer will prove its not needed.

Edit

Whilst a far reaching ID card couldn't come in time........some sort of vaccine passport could probably come in in time for summer holidays though? Could that be a precursor to a fuller system in 2022?
