It's a police term to catagorise a certain type of killing / murder. It links back to other countries where it is more common. It also allows officers to best allocate resources and investigation strategies.

'honour' based violence is very common. It's also identifiable and brings into play back office work and prevent strategies.

As has been explained its not about there being any honour in the killing. To label it racist based only would put it into the catagory where victim and offender have no real link. In honour based violence the offender is linked to the victim. Again this impacts of strategies.

It's no different to referring to trident killings in the MPD.

This exactly. Don't get hung up on he term "honour". It just allows the Police to follow up lines of enquiries that may not have been immediately obvious. I think sensible people accept there is nothing honourable about these murders.

It's not racist really; all races can be involved.

What it is is somewhat anti-Islamic. I've not looked into the matter but I'd be quite surprised if these killings weren't limited to a small number of Islamic sects however.
What a stunning example of casual prejudice! hehe

If you had looked into the matter, you would've discovered that around 60% of "honour" killings in the UK are in the Muslim community, with around 40% in the Hindu & Sikh communities.

Latin America has a pretty strong line in honour killings of gay family members too, despite a pretty distinct lack of Islamic sects.
