A small minority who avail themselves of Islam need to be addressed, but religion as a whole doesn't.

Maybe in the UK, but in the US it is a different story. No-one said at a whole, but extremism, and religion bleeding into politics IS an issue. think I made that clear.
How so? I live in the deep south (I live in Florida and Surrey, currently exiled from the US though) and although there are loads of churches, how do they get into politics?

Politicians do have to canvas the Christian movement, but is that so bad? People have a value system and they vote for the person that best upholds those values.

Surely the UK is an example of unrestrained liberalism, and what do we really have to show for it? Social breakdown, benefit entitlements, crimes that people don't even bother to report (someone broke into my van last weekend - £160 of damage - no point in reporting it), and so forth.

Please don't reply using the words "neo-con" smile

How do they get into politics? The churches don't, (on the whole), however that is not the issue. It is the religious furvor that some politicians are bringing to the table, such as Bush, Palin, Huckerbee, and so on, as well as the recent issues with regards to Evangelistic school boards having far too much sway over school text books. The Texas school board that decided on THEIR books get's spread across the rest of the states, as the Texas text books get used elsewhere. Then you have the Dover trial type events, and the recent one in kentucky, where they tried a back door way yo get creationism into the science classroom.

The use of God is VERY prevalent on Fox news, with their rabid Father Jonathan. The Jewish lobby, and in the past the 'Moral Majority' run by that foul mouthed dog Falwell. religion is very much in the public arena, and it does need to be kept on a leash.

Edited to add, of course, we then have the veiled threats like the recent one against South Park, with reference to Van Gogh. Extremism does need stopping. The recent militia on a mission from God, and all the rest of the absurd religious nonsense out there. Note this is NOT regular people, who go about their lives. It is the idiots, and the fkwits that are the cause of 'new atheism'.

So are we saying it's ok for the religious to offend people in the High Street?
Yes, that's OK. To repeatedly come into your house against your wishes is not OK.

You are always going to have the lunatic fringe, but banning all religion on that basis is neither helpful nor necessary.

Another issue is that religion does an awful lot of good, but we never focus on the positive side. So we get this negative attitude created by a small number of nutters.
